Class of 2025 - Common App Essay Promps
Message from the Common App:
We are happy to announce that the Common App essay prompts will remain the same for 2024–2025.
Our decision to keep these prompts unchanged is supported by past research showing that overall satisfaction with the prompts exceeded 95% across our constituent groups - students, counselors, advisors, teachers, and member colleges. Moving forward, we want to learn more about who is choosing certain prompts to see if there are any noteworthy differences among student populations and incorporate feedback into future decisions.
While some schools are beginning discussions with juniors and transfer students about college options, it's important to clarify that this doesn't mean students need to start writing their essays right away. By releasing the prompts early, we hope to give students ample time for reflection and brainstorming. As you guide students with their planning, feel free to use our Common App ReadyLinks, essay writing resource, available in both English and Spanish.
For students who wish to start exploring the application process, creating a Common App account before August 1 ensures that all their responses, including their personal essays, will be retained through account rollover.
Below is the full set of essay prompts for 2024–2025.
- Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.
- The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
- Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?
- Reflect on something that someone has done for you that has made you happy or thankful in a surprising way. How has this gratitude affected or motivated you?
- Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.
- Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?
- Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.
We will retain the optional community disruption question within the Writing section. Over the next year, we'll consult with our member, counselor, and student advisory committees to ensure we gather diverse perspectives and make informed decisions.

Madonna University Updates
I hope everyone is having a good spring semester and getting ready for Graduation. We have a few new changes at Madonna University that will help a lot of students for the Fall 2024 start.
- We have lowered our GPA requirement to a 2.5 to be admissible.
- We have increased our Merit Scholarship. See Chart.
- We decreased our Live-On Requirement from 2 years to 1 year to live on campus.
- Expanded the geographical boundaries for students to commute to campus. See Chart/Map
If you could let your Juniors and Seniors know about these changes, that would be very helpful for me! We will/are in the process of updating the merit scholarships for students who were admitted before the increase in scholarships.
FAFSA Information from Oakland University
Greetings from Oakland University!
For most students, there is no reason to delay the submission of the 2024-25 FAFSA online at studentaid.gov. The FAFSA environment is stable for FAFSA completion.
The one group of students that may encounter challenges are those whose parent(s) do not have a social security number. The Department of Education has communicated that a solution is coming. While the paper FAFSA is an option for this population, we are only encouraging that as a last resort, if the student needs to meet some type of FAFSA submission deadline.
At least three days before completing the FAFSA, both the student and their contributor(s) (i.e., parent(s)) need to get their studentaid.gov login credentials.
If families need help with FAFSA completion, please encourage them to attend an event you are hosting at your school, or they are always welcome to join one of OU’s virtual events.
Remind them to have their studentaid.gov credentials and their 2022 federal tax returns on-hand.
While FAFSA information isn’t going to be released to universities until sometime in the first half of March, what we don’t want is for students to wait – waiting will only further delay their financial aid award offers.
We know that families are anxious to know what types of financial aid their student may qualify for, and the good news is that OU has updated our Net Price Calculator to use as a tool to receive an estimate of how much financial aid a family can expect to receive. Please feel free to share the link with students and families.
2024 Michigan high school graduates with a Student Aid Index (SAI) of less than or equal to $30,000 will qualify for the Michigan Achievement Scholarship - but only if they complete the FAFSA. Additionally, here at OU, if the student receives the Michigan Achievement Scholarship and has a family income of less than or equal to $70,000, and family assets less than $50,000, they will also automatically qualify for our Golden Guarantee - that’s free tuition for four years!
It is more important than ever that students complete the FAFSA. There is no reason to wait!
Dear Families,
Now is the time for your student to submit their 2024-25 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at studentaid.gov. Please be sure both the student and parent(s) each have their own studentaid.gov login credentials to complete the FAFSA. Each person needs to set up the credentials at least three days before starting the FAFSA.
Every eligible student should complete the FAFSA, if they are planning to attend college or a trade school in the fall. The FAFSA is what makes students eligible for federal, state and some college-specific financial aid, including grants, scholarships, loans and work-study.
There is NO REASON to wait to complete the FAFSA, as it is based on 2022 tax information.
If you need assistance, Oakland University offers free virtual workshops that you can register to attend, or we have a FAFSA Workshop coming up on <INSERT DATE> here at our school.
