To the Highlander Community:
As we move into the New Year and end the 1st Semester, I wanted to update you on some District Initiatives. As I mentioned in the letter and the November Newsletter, we continue to struggle with enrollment at the Warren Campus due to the distance and time on the bus. In addition, we are struggling with the budget due to transportation costs. Moving the campus to Providence would alleviate both of these issues.
When we first looked for a building in Providence for the Middle High School, there were very strict “School Siting” laws. That eliminated many of the buildings we looked at. Those laws have changed and are more lenient, meaning more buildings can be used as schools. We are currently working with one of our Board Members and have seen four or five buildings since October. We will continue to explore our options and keep families posted. If we have any serious options we will loop families in to share their thoughts and opinions.
January begins the State Assessment windows starting with the ACCESS Testing(grades K-12) for our Multi-Language Learners. Following the ACCESS, we have the National Assessment of Educational Progress (Grades 4 and 8), the RICAS (grades 3-8), PSAT and SAT (grades 10 and 11) and the Next Generation Science Assessment (grades 4,8 and 11). You will be receiving information with a schedule prior to each assessment. Please remember to remind your students to do their best on each assessment.
Later in January, I will also be sending information from our incoming Superintendent. The information will include a transition timeline and a list of priorities for that period.
I hope you had a Safe and Enjoyable Holiday

Opportunities from Community Organizations
National Youth Science Camp
High School Juniors & Seniors are Invited to Apply for National Youth Science Camp
Nominations and applications are now being accepted from high school juniors and seniors in the classes of 2024 and 2025 to represent Rhode Island at the 2024 National Youth Science Camp (NYSCamp). Two students from RI will be invited to attend the all-expenses-paid program, which will be held from June 29th to July 20th 2024.
Hosted in Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia since 1963, the NYSCamp is a residential science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) program designed to honor and challenge some of the nation’s rising STEAM leaders and provide them with opportunities to engage with STEAM professionals and participate in exciting outdoor activities.
The 2024 NYSCamp will aim to be fully in person for three full weeks of in-person programming. Selected delegates must commit to attending the entire camp! This experience will include world-class lectures, directed studies, and seminars with prestigious and up-and-coming STEAM professionals who are making a difference in their fields of study and changing the world for good. The camp will also provide significant opportunities for delegates to interact and engage with STEAM professionals, camp staph (a traditional and intentional misspelling to highlight their infectious enthusiasm), and other delegates in exciting, fun, and meaningful ways.
The NYSCamp is offered to selected students at no cost—including meals, housing, and transportation—so that talented students may attend regardless of their financial ability. For more information about the program, please visit the NYSC website. If you would like to nominate a high school junior or senior in the U.S. to apply for the 2024 NYSCamp, you can submit a nomination here. Applications must be submitted at this site by 11:59 PM EST on February 29, 2024. For more information, please contact Carolyn.Higgins@RIDE.RI.gov

Power to Explore Challenge
For the Power to Explore Challenge, NASA is calling on K-12 students in the United States to research Radioisotope Power Systems (RPS), a type of nuclear “battery” used in space exploration, and dream up a new RPS-powered space mission to a destination with limited or obstructed access to light. Grand prize winners from each grade category (3 total) will receive a trip for two to NASA’s Glenn Research Center to learn about the people and technologies that enable NASA missions. Every student who submits an entry will receive a digital certificate and an invitation to a virtual event with NASA experts where they’ll learn about what powers the NASA workforce to dream big and explore.
