WIND TURBINES
BY YEAR 5
What is it?
Wind Turbines are machines that change the energy of moving air into the form of energy we call electricity. A big wind turbine is a very large structure.
What does it look like and What are its Special Features?
Propeller
The most common type of wind turbine, has two or three large rotors (blades) on a tall pole or pylon.
Pylon
The pylon may be more than 100 metres tall. It is hollow for lightness combined with strength.
Turbine
The propeller turbine is a horizontal-axis design. The shaft or ‘axle’ (axis) for the rotors is horizontal.
