Note From the Principal
Dear Families,
Did you know attendance matters and attendance habits start at the elementary level? Below are some important facts to consider:
Starting in kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
Missing 10 percent (or about 18 days) can make it harder to learn to read.
Students can still fall behind if they miss just a day or two every few weeks.
Being late to school or leaving early may lead to poor attendance.
Regular attendance is part of Michigan’s Compulsory Attendance law.
A note from the doctor is coded as a medically excused absence.
These facts along with other statistics regarding the importance of school attendance can be found by visiting the attendanceworks.org website.
Attendance letters from school are sent home periodically. Our goal is to inform you of your child's attendance record and to encourage regular attendance.
For further attendance guidelines, you can check out our West Shore parent/student handbook found on the district website at www.lakefentonschools.org.
Yours in learning,
Mrs. Shaughnessy

STUDENT END OF DAY PICK-UP - SAFETY FIRST!
Just a reminder, due to safety concerns during end of day student pick up times, West Shore has a "NO LOBBY" pick -up policy.
In the past, lobby pick-up was an option. However, this policy changed as it became increasingly difficult to monitor students and the adults picking up students. We have several safety factors to consider including custody issues and "safe adults" who are on emergency contact lists.
From time to time there are extenuating circumstances. In those instances, Mrs. Shaughnessy will consider and/or approve alternate end of the day options. Please contact the office with any end of day student pick up issues.
Watch D.O.G.S.
Our Watch D.O.G.S program (Dads of Great Students) kicked off earlier this month. The Watch D.O.G.S. program encourages dads and father figures to be involved by spending the day at school volunteering in classrooms, at recess, and during lunch. We have a limited number of spaces available however, we may add more spots throughout the school year. Below is the link to sign up for Watch D.O.G.S.
Our Watch D.O.G.S also get to wear an awesome official Watch D.O.G.S shirt. Below is the link so that you can order your own shirt.

DROP OFF & PICKUP REMINDERS
Thank you for your patience and attention to safety.
A.M. - When using the morning drop off lane, please pull ahead as far as possible past the front doors to allow more cars to enter the lane. Students may be released along the length of the lane. Once students are released, you may safely pull around and exit via the left lane. There are extra adult helpers to guide you and our students. A new blue safety line is in place to guide students walking to the front entrance doors.
P.M. - When using the afternoon pick-up lane, please follow safety protocols by pulling ahead, staying inside your vehicle, and driving slowly through the lane. Students must enter the vehicle on the passenger side and your name card must be visible. We are all doing the best we can to get our students to you quickly and safely. Thank you for your support.
