NO SCHOOL 8/18 and 8/19
Dear Prairie Families,
Welcome back, Pumas! We hope you all had a great summer break and are excited for the new school year!
School starts at 8:15 tomorrow. We'd like to ask everyone to use extra precaution during drop off and pick up. We have a lot of families coming through our parking lot. Follow the map provided below to help keep our puma community safe. Be advised that there will be construction on Matmor and Gum until December. This could affect traffic flow to and from school.
Students who are eating breakfast can be dropped off at 7:45 and enter through the side door of the gym near the flag pole. We will allow our TK and kindergarten parents only to accompany their students to the cafeteria for the first week of school. Starting at 8:00, there will be supervision on both playgrounds. TK-2 students should enter through the gym near the flagpole to reach the playground. TK parents who will not be dropping off early will need to park and walk their child directly to the classroom.
It is forecasted to reach 103* tomorrow. Please send a water bottle with your child.
Students in grades 2-6, be sure to charge your Chromebook and bring it back to school in its sleeve for day 1. Please call the front office if you have lost or damaged your Chromebook.
There is no school on Thursday and Friday due to the County Fair.
Next week, we will have our Puma Kick-off Week SPIRIT WEEK! Show your school spirit and promote positive behavior by dressing up each day. Spirit points will be awarded for each student/class dressed up for spirit week. The winning class will receive a special treat. See flyer below for detail.
We are excited to offer a series of parent workshops this year. There are 8 sessions total. On August 24th, we will be holding an orientation at Prairie from 6:30-8:30. All parents and guardians are invited. See more information below.
Sincerely,
Kelly Schevenin, Principal & Connie Price, Vice Principal

Expanded Learning Program (ASES)
After-school Program
WJUSD is proud to offer Expanded Learning Programs- free after school programs for elementary students. Expanded Learning is a new program that includes the former ASES program. Students who are enrolled in the ASES program for the 2022-23 school year will automatically be enrolled into this new program.
If you are interested in our program for a student not currently enrolled, please fill out our interest form here:
*Keep in mind you will be placed on a waitlist after completing this form. We are working on hiring additional staff based on waitlist interest. Our Expanded Learning Site Support Specialist, Destiny Garcia, will follow up as soon as possible to begin enrollment once a space is identified. Due to statewide staffing challenges, there may be delays in enrollment, as we do not have enough tutors to serve all interested students at this time. As we acquire additional tutors, we will continue enrolling students off the waitlist.
We aim to provide after school programs to all students as soon as possible, and to minimize time on the waitlist. All Prairie elementary students are eligible to participate in this free program.
If you have questions, comments or concerns please feel free to contact your Expanded Learning Site Support Specialists or reach out to our district Expanded Learning Coordinator:

District: Tori Peterson (tori.peterson@wjusd.org)
We're Hiring!
Are you looking for some part-time work while also participating at your child's school? We are looking for one Noon Duty Supervisor, Monday through Friday, 11:00-1:00. We also need a crossing guard before and after school. Call the front office if you are interested and apply here.
Prairie PTA
We are looking for PTA Officers for this school year. We hope to bring back family events this year--like the Harvest Festival--and we need your help. We will hold a general meeting soon!
Campus Safety
As we welcome you back to the 2022-23 school year we want you to know that the safety of your student is our number one priority. We understand that you may have concerns about the safety of your student, as well as concerns about our security measures and practices that are in place and carried out at our school.
We would like you to be aware of some of the security measures we have in place and the efforts to reinforce those measures.
Security cameras are routinely monitored at the front entrance, the exterior of the school, and throughout the school building.
Exterior classroom doors remain locked during the hours students are on campus.
Our school district works closely with the Woodland Police Department and has 3 full-time School Resource Officers assigned to the District who are present in our buildings on a varying schedule during the school day and at school events.
The school engages in school-wide emergency practices as fire, earthquake and lockdown drills.
Staff members are trained in shelter-in-place drills, lockdowns, evacuations, first aid and AED training.
Security monitoring devices and safety practices are continuously evaluated, tested, and updated in conjunction with our School Safety Plan Review at the start of each school year.
Visitors are required to check-in and are screened in our front office before entering our campus.
As a staff, we frequently review our School Safety Plan. Our Safety Committee updates our plan each September. If you would like to participate in our safety committee, please contact our Vice Principal, Mrs. Price, at (530) 662-2898.
