"Bytes" From Your School Leader, Dr. Townsend
April 5, 2024
Greetings Phalen Virtual Leadership Academy Families,
Happy Friday! Welcome Back from Spring Break! Have you ever heard this saying? April Showers bring May Flowers! We have truly experienced rain this week in Indiana with flood warnings and watches in most counties. I hope everyone stayed safe and as dry as possible.
We were so excited to get back into the swing of things to finish the year strong. We have a few busy weeks ahead with mandatory state testing and NWEA along with continued academics and participation in all classes.
Please be sure to check your email and ensure you have completed the intent to return form for your scholar(s) to ensure we have a seat next school year for everyone currently enrolled.
We are also gearing up for SUMMER ADVANTAGE, our summer learning program that keeps your scholar engaged in academics while having fun! Registration is now open for all scholars in grades 2-7.
Monday, April 8, 2024 is a special day! We will experience a TOTAL ECLIPSE in Indiana! Please see below for some helpful information to prepare for this special day. We will have a regular school day and will allow scholars and staff to experience the solar eclipse during class periods 6 and 7 with an asynchronous assignment.
We look forward to seeing your scholar(s) on Monday, April 8, 2024 at 8:35 a.m. in class for Week 36 at PLA Virtual!
With Gratitude,
Dr. Townsend, Principal

Speak with a FAFSA Representative to get help filling it out.
-This is a great option if you have issues or hesitation with uploading your tax documents, cannot answer certain questions on the form, or have specific questions about student loans.
Speaking of graduation…Graduation will be on Saturday, May 18, 2024 at 2 PM at James and Rosemary Phalen Leadership Academy. It will be a wonderful time to witness our seniors achieve this great milestone!
If you have a student who is not graduating this year, it’s a great time to go over their progress towards graduation. Ask Mrs. Moses for a copy of their credit tracker to ensure they are on track!
Some Post-Pandemic Attendance Facts Pt. 2
The COVID-19 Pandemic seems to be the gift that no one wants, but the gift that keeps on giving. This is no different when it comes to K-12 attendance. It's going to take aggressive interventions to repair the pandemic's destructive impact on kids' schooling. There's still a lot of work to do on both student achievement and absenteeism.
Here are some facts:
Chronic absenteeism also hurts the students who don't miss school. That's because, as the learning study's authors point out, when absent students return, they require extra attention and "make it hard for teachers to keep the whole class moving."
Some families are not correctly prioritizing attendance. Family emergencies, trips and even medical appointments can sometimes medical appointments during the school day add up. Looking at how families perceive the importance of daily attendance relative to other challenges in their lives, some parents seem more inclined now to let their students miss school for various reasons, perhaps not realizing the links between absenteeism and negative, downstream consequences.
