Chaplain's Corner
“Life would be so much easier if it wasn’t for people!” I once heard a professor jokingly say this to a classroom full of people. Perhaps he was only half joking. Have you ever felt this way? People can be pretty difficult at times. I saw a shirt that said there’s 3 things that stress me out. Hot days, annoying people, and having to stand too close to annoying people on hot days!
Whether you’re naturally an outgoing extrovert or a stay at home introvert, we can all find ourselves in a position every now and then where someone is just absolutely driving us crazy. It might be a boss or co-worker. It could be a neighbor or the person driving slowly in front of us. It could even be our spouse or kids. People are difficult. It’s just the way it is. But here’s the thing…people are what really matter. God matters most but every time we try to get close to God he leads us to other people. Every time I try to tell God I love him he always tells me to love others. It seems that anything spiritual must also be relational.
Dr. Kent Keith wrote something called the Paradoxical Commandments. In them, he says, “People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered. Love them anyway. People really need help but may attack you if you do help them. Help people anyway.”
One of the greatest lessons we can teach our kids is to treat others with kindness. Loving others is what really matters. We want our children to do well academically and make good grades. We want them to succeed athletically and win the soccer championship. But, in the end, I’d rather have my child be the kind of kid that becomes a friend to the person at school that has no friends than to be a straight A student.
These are the things we’ve been teaching your players at practice over the past few weeks. Our last few themes have been…
- God is real, and I can know him.
- I can help others know God.
- I was made to know and love God.
- I can love God by loving others.
We want your player to know that he or she can have a relationship with God. They can know God! But we also want each player to understand that knowing God means helping others. People that know God help others to know God. People that love God love others.
My prayer is that God will give you fresh opportunities to show your love for him by loving those around you, and that your child will see and learn from the example you are setting.
