Pamlico Sound is the largest sound on the East Coast. It is seperated from the Atlantic Ocean by the Barrier Islands.
Why Estuaries?
Estuaries are vital habitats for thousands of marine species. Estuaries have been called the "nurseries of the sea" because the protected environment and abundant food provide an ideal location for fish and shellfish to reproduce.
Plants and Animals in the Pamlico Sound
Some animals that live in the Pamlico Sound are the logger head sea turtles, green sea turtles, bald eagle and the piping plover.
River and streams that feed into the Pamlico Sound
There are 5 major rivers that feed into the Pamlico Sound: The Chowan, Roanoke, Pasquotank, Tar-Pamlico, and Neuse.
Threats to the Pamlico Sound
Threats to Pamlico Sound include water contamination, dredging, global warming, and erosion.
