Study: U. S. Doctors reluctant to advise smokers on smoking cessation
A U. S. survey shows that most doctors in the United States remain reluctant to recommend the vaporizer for smoking cessation.
Two-thirds of the doctors interviewed advise against vaping
An article published in Annals of the American Thoracic Society reports the results of a survey evaluating physicians' responses to their patients' questions about vaporization.
Doctors were asked how they would respond to "a 27-year-old smoker with moderate asthma who asked if he or she could use the vaporizer to help him or her quit smoking?"
Approximately two-thirds of respondents indicated that they would not recommend the e-cigarette to this patient and would prescribe FDA-approved products. On the contrary, 18% would encourage him/her to vaporize to stop smoking while 14% would not really recommend him/her telling the patient that he/she is free to decide.
"It's up to you."
An additional scenario was suggested for those who advised against using vape starter kit as a first line of advice: the smoker explained that he had already tried to quit smoking with these products but that he had failed and specifically asked for their opinion on e cigarettes.
In this case 27% of doctors recommended the vape, 51% tolerated it "I don't recommend but you should see it" and 28% formally advised against it.
The authors of the study point out that in asthmatic patients, studies have shown that in the short term, the use of vaporizer improves symptoms and respiratory function.
"Keep smoking instead of vaping"
In his blog, public health professor Dr. Michael Siegel deplores "appalling" results for him "more than two-thirds of doctors essentially advise their patients to continue smoking rather than trying to quit smoking by choosing the vape".
The public health expert believes that these health professionals "are misled" by "misinformation campaigns conducted by anti-tobacco groups and certain health organizations, including the FDA and CDC. He denounces misinformation that is detrimental to public health and advocates that the general attitude towards these products in the United States is rapidly evolving towards a risk reduction policy that would save millions of lives.
