Busy Spring!
Remember: Students may not order food for delivery during the school day. It will be turned away and you will lose your money!
Spring Craziness
We'll do our best to keep you informed. These newsletters will be considerably longer than previous ones so please hang onto them for reference later. We do add them all to the website at https://www.isd709.org/duluth-east/duluth-east-newsletters.
Senior Reminders:
All book fees are due, overdue fines were just sent again in the mail. Commencement tickets will not be issued to students until all fees, overdue books, chromebooks, and chargers have been returned. Watch for more information about these deadlines.
Sources of Strength Spirit Week: April 4-8
Recently, Sources has been busy planning our upcoming Spring Week April 4th - 8th! Partnering with Association, we have managed to plan out a very exciting week to welcome spring for our East students.
The theme this year is Seasons of East, and our days are laid out as follows:
- Monday is Summer Beach Day! You should dress in your beach clothes (but of course, all within the parameters of the dress code) for a sunny day at the beach!
- Tuesday is Autumn Day! Dress up in a Halloween costume (no weapons allowed) or dress in a fall aesthetic.
- Wednesday is Winter Weather Day! Dress up in your favorite winter gear for the winters storms ahead.
- By Thursday, Spring has Sprung! Dress in gardening and rain gear, because April showers may bring May flowers in other places, but here we always expect a shower!
- And on Friday, dress as your strongest part of the wheel! Show your support for SOS!
There are WIN period and after-school activities planned for every day as well, and we hope to see the participation of everyone!
On Monday, there will be collections for a book sale taking place on Thursday during WIN. If you have any books to donate, feel free to drop them off in the Career Center! On Tuesday, we will be having a fundraiser through Qdoba, so maybe think about showing your support and getting some great dinner! A portion of sales between 4-8 pm will go toward SOS.
If you’ve never attended a semi-formal, now’s your chance! In place of Harvest, Exec Board is hosting Spring Fling! It will be happening at East on Friday from 8-10:30 pm! Tickets are $11 online and $10 in person.
We are so excited to celebrate spring with each and every one of you! Here’s to new beginnings!
Duluth East Daredevils Robotics Update
The Daredevils have been busy recently! After almost a complete reboot from Covid, we found ourselves starting over. After getting the team up and running again, we hosted a successful kickoff to our build season on January 8th at East, and we have been working hard ever since. This year, our robot is called Anvil, and so far, it can climb, intake and shoot balls, and play defense.
From March 3-5, we attended the Northern Lights Regional at the DECC and placed 34th out of 53 teams. From April 7-9, we will be attending the North Star Regional in the Twin Cities. We are excited to keep competing, building, and planning.
While our Fabrication team has been hard at work, our Logistics team is looking ahead. After making all the plans for our upcoming regional, they are beginning to work on plans for the summer tournament hosted at East, the Gitchi Gummi Get Together (it will be held this year from July 15-16), our summer elementary and middle school camps, and more!
On April 14, 2022, we are hosting our seventh annual Revel With the Daredevils fundraiser event! It will run from 5:00 - 8:00 in the Duluth East cafeteria, and there will be food, a silent auction, a bake sale, robot demonstrations, and more! Tickets will be available at the door, and prices will be sent out soon! Here is the link to the RSVP form: Revel With the Daredevils RSVP form. We hope to garner as much support as we can at this event! There will be more details to come, and for more information, please feel free to email team@daredevils2512.org or contact us through our website: daredevils2512.org.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this, and we hope to see you at one of our upcoming events!

Spring Fling tickets go on sale Wednesday, March 30 online and during lunches. They can be purchased online until 3 hours prior to the dance and can also be purchased at the door.
REMEMBER:
1. Because this is going to be held at East, we will will not be able to include visitors. Only current East students in good standing will be admitted. 4. Students who are removed from a dance will not be allowed to attend another one for 6 months. (This includes prom!)

Film Festival Submissions
Red and Grey week may seem far away, but it’s not as far as you think. Film Club and Exec are pairing up to bring you a film festival of our very own. Submissions for the Duluth East Film Festival are open from now until April 25th! We would like submissions to be less than 8 minutes long, and they should align with the theme: The East PRIDE Campaign! The parts of this campaign are peace, respect, integrity, diversity, and enthusiasm. At the festival, awards will be given for different aspects of the films. Please send your submissions to maggie.muller2@isd709.org. We’re excited to see your submissions!
Science Superstars!
Regional Science Fair
Stella Harbson, Emelyn Beaster, and Lucia Nelson all participated in the Regional Science Fair Competition at UMD in March. All three students placed first in each of their categories, and will be competing at the state competition later this spring.
Stella Harbson: "Does Awareness of Misleading Questions Reduce Memory Inaccuracy?"
Emelyn Beaster: "Qualitative Analysis of the Effects of Climate Change on Wildfire Occurrence and Severity in Northeast MN."
Lucia Nelson: "Study Notes: How Music Affects Learning."
Toothpick Bridge Break Off
The (in)famous toothpick bridge break-off is complete. Over 50 students were on hand to test their bridges to failure. Each of their bridges had already held 15 kg (2.2 lbs./kg). Before the competition, awards were handed out for most aesthetically pleasing. Here are the results:Most Aesthetically Pleasing
1st place - Emma Waddick
2nd Place- Andrew Lussier
3rd place - JT Norick
Then came the strongest bridge competition. After about 20 minutes of loading up to 30 kg, only three bridges remained. When all was said and done, it wasn't close...Izzy Williams was the champ. In dramatic fashion Izzy's bridge held over 51 kg as the testing equipment failed before her bridge did! Here are the final results:
Strongest Bridge
1st place - Izzy Williams (51+ kg...over 112 lbs.)
2nd Place- Elsa Jones (37 kg)
3rd place - Owen Steiner (33.5 kg)
Congrats to all who made it to the break-off.
Saturday School and Prescription for Success Reminder
Saturday School and Prescription for Success are an opportunity for students to make up time from unexcused absences/unexcused tardies, to complete unfinished school work, projects or tests/quizzes, and to receive tutoring from an East National Honor Society Student. The Prescription for Success is a voluntary agreement between teacher and student that allows for work to be made up during Saturday School. Quality work completed during that time will be given at least 60% credit. Students can be assigned a specific tutor to assist while at Saturday School. Students should see their classroom teacher if they would like to take part in Prescription for Success or would like a tutor for Saturday School.
Remaining Saturday School Dates for 21-22 School Year:
- March 26, 2022
- April 9, 2022
