Eclipse Viewing on April 8th
On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. In our area, the Partial Eclipse begins at 12:32 p.m. and continues through 3:04 p.m., with the maximum eclipse occurring around 1:48 p.m. when most of the Sun’s surface will be covered by the Moon. As educators, we could not be more thrilled to have school in session that day and be able to provide students with amazing learning opportunities for this rare event – the next opportunity to view a total solar eclipse from the contiguous United States won't occur until 2044!
Solar eclipse viewing glasses will be provided for every student and staff member at USD 462 who may view the eclipse. We will teach and practice with all students the safe viewing of an eclipse and stress the importance of ONLY viewing the eclipse through the glasses. Students will be required to wear their glasses anytime they are observing the sun and eclipse.
We believe students and staff of Central Schools will have a safe and fun experience viewing the eclipse by participating in planned activities in their school building. If you prefer your child NOT to participate in the solar eclipse viewing, please let your principal know and there will be an option for your child to participate in a supervised, alternative activity that will be provided at school.
We look forward to sharing this experience with students and staff on April 8. If you have any questions, please contact the school at 620-438-2215 or email jhenning@usd462.org prior to Noon.
State Assessment Information
- Testing will take place during 3rd hour & WIN Time to allow for additional test time. See schedule below.
- An announcement will be made to notify students as to which testing location they go to if they are scheduled to test that day. It will also be posted by the office window.
- Bells will be turned off during the time of testing to limit interruptions.
- Absolutely no announcements can be/will be made during the state assessment testing window.
- Teachers will plan not to have intense instruction/homework during testing time as students may be missing class for state testing and we want that to be the emphasis and not have them worrying about missing instruction and assignments.
- It is crucial that all students are set up for success as much as possible during this time. Ex: Be present at school, eat breakfast, charge chromebook, go to bed early the night before, etc.
- State testing is required by the state of Kansas. All students are required by law to complete. If a student is absent from school, they will make up the test during week 3. It is crucial that all students are present during their normally scheduled testing time and come prepared to try their best!
- Non testing students:
- Remain in classrooms, limit hallway movement and noise in the classroom. Read a book during WIN time.
- Testing Students:
- Snacks/drinks will be provided to students
- Come prepared with a charged chromebook
- Plan for testing students to be absent from assigned class hour for testing
- Headphones will be provided to students to limit distractions.
- We are working to continue to place a larger emphasis on state assessments this year and our desire to have our students do well on these tests. Please help us in informing students of the importance of doing their best on these tests.
