A Message from your Principal, Mrs. Katie Johnson
Spring is approaching! While we still have lots to accomplish this school year, it's also time to start preparing for the next academic year. There are many decisions to be made around scheduling, staffing, and professional learning, but generating class lists is one of the most important things we do to create the foundation for continued success in the upcoming school year.
The process of generating class lists is collaborative in nature and involves input from individuals from all aspects of our school. The integrity and professionalism of our staff is the foundation of our wonderful school. We feel that we know each of our students well. We know their learning styles, relationships with peers, academic strengths and challenges. Our intention is to create groups of children who reflect heterogeneity and cohesiveness.
Student placement is based upon many considerations. Some of the influencing factors in this process include:
Balance of male and female students
A heterogeneous range of reading, writing, and math in each room
Consideration of emotional needs, giftedness, and other special needs
Separation of social conflicts
Balance of students with strong leadership qualities
Balance of students with good study habits
Your input is important. If you would like to add to our knowledge of your child’s social, emotional, or academic needs, you may do so by submitting this form to me no later than 3pm Friday, March 22nd. LATE submissions may not be accepted due to the timeline of the overall process. Please note, this is completely optional.
In the past, we may have made attempts to match up younger siblings with the same teacher that their older brother or sister had. I understand the value of relationships and the consistency that this offers. However, this factor does not supersede the overall goal of creating groups of children who reflect heterogeneity and cohesiveness. Please note, this information is still important. If you and your child had a positive experience, and you think that information is important for us to consider, please include that information on the form. Requests for specific teachers will not be granted and should not be part of the information you share.
The needs and information you share will be treated as part of the process in making assignments for next year. Please respect the integrity of this process. Thank you in advance for your assistance and cooperation. I am excited about next year and look forward to your continued partnership as we work together for the success of your child.
Thank you,
Katie Johnson
Principal
5 Essentials Survey
We need your help and value your input! Each year the 5 Essentials Survey is offered to parents/guardians as a means to provide meaningful feedback on the performance of our school.
I personally invite each of you to take just a few minutes to complete the survey to ensure your voice is heard.
The challenge we face is that our school will only receive the results of the parent/guardian survey if more than 20% of our families complete the survey. While the majority of schools don't make the minimum requirement, we hope to be able to access this very beneficial information.
Thank you for taking time to provide meaningful feedback.
WHAT IS THE 5ESSENTIALS SURVEY?
The 5Essentials Survey identifies five indicators that lead to improved outcomes for all students, including improved attendance and larger test score gains.
The five indicators that positively affect school success are:
- Effective Leaders
- Collaborative Teachers
- Involved Families
- Supportive Environments
- Ambitious Instruction
Research derived from the Five Essentials for School Success has proven that schools strong on at least three of the 5Essentials are 10 times more likely to improve student outcomes.
Schools across Illinois participated in the Tenth annual 5Essentials Survey of Learning Conditions: Organizing Schools for Improvement this past academic year. This survey generates valuable data that districts can use to guide their ongoing efforts to improve schools and to offer students an excellent education. The survey is another improvement tool that allows districts and the state to share data as a means to inform parents and community members about the school’s learning environment. The Illinois 5Essentials Survey is administered online by Chicago Impact at the University of Chicago on behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education. Data and indicators are a result from an anonymous administration of the survey instrument.
Reviewing Lunchroom Expectations
As we strive to maintain a positive and respectful environment in the school's lunchroom, I kindly ask for your assistance in reviewing lunchroom expectations with your children. We believe that reinforcing these expectations at home will help promote a culture of responsibility and respect during lunchtime. By discussing the importance of proper behavior, cleanliness, and consideration for others during meals, we can collectively ensure a pleasant and safe environment for all students.
Thank you for your continued support in fostering a positive school community.
Lunchroom Expectations: I can....
- I can eat my lunch.
- I can use my hand signals for help.
- Students remain in their seats until an adult has given permission to use the restroom or get water.
- I can use a Level 2 voice.
- Level 2 voice: Normal/Conversational Voice. Can only be heard at your table.
- I can listen and follow directions.
- I can keep my body and objects to myself.
- I can throw away my trash.
- Students keep all of their trash with them until the end of lunch. Adults bring the trashcans around for students to throw away trash.
- I can follow the stoplight cues.
- Red Light: Level 0 Voices (Silent) Stop. look and listen.
- Yellow Light: Level 2 Voices (Normal/Conversational Voices). Trashcans come around for clean up. Students should begin to gather trash on the table and around their area, and wait for the adults to bring the trashcan to them.
- Green Light: Level 2 Voices. In seats eating.
Cougars Reading Club: Reading Incentive
The Game Plan
Our school will be participating in the Cougars Reading Club, a reading incentive program sponsored by the Kane County Cougars baseball team. Your child will have the opportunity to improve their reading skills while earning a free ticket to a Cougars game, enjoying a free hot dog and drink at the game and participating in a parade on the field before the game.
This incentive program will be taking place from now through March. Your child will advance the bases as they commit to reading every night. Your child's classroom teacher will share the specific goal set for their class.
If students earn their free ticket, families will receive a voucher and an order form to purchase additional tickets for family members. There have been two dates that have been blocked for Elizabeth Ide so families and classmates can plan to attend together; Saturday, May 18th at 6:30 p.m. or Saturday, May 25th at 6:30 p.m.
We hope this reading challenge will be a grand slam with your support!
