Honoring Teachers through your role... from J
Recall that the term Principal comes from Principal Teacher, an association that we may occasionally lose our relationship with. Being a Principal, in this mindset, is to be a Teacher of Teachers. That means we model, inspire, direct, push, pull, plan, and work alongside of these amazing individuals who are guiding the daily learning with all our students. When I recognized the teachers' ability and honored their artistry, I learned that my direct impact on so many students would always pale in comparison to the teacher's influence. So I directed my focus on the adults in my building, keeping what was best for students and their learning as the outcome. Lesson learned: As a principal, I would never be able to have the meaningful relationships for deep learning with all my students. But I could have the meaningful relationship with all my teachers that drives deep learning for all our students.
My challenge to you this Teacher Appreciation Week is to examine your impact. If your experience is anything like mine, your greatest influence will be through the culture, relationships and modeling that you are driving through your teachers. Do they know you appreciate and value them through your leadership?

On the Range...
After listening to Delta 9 feedback concerning the timeline for collecting guided reading/fluent reader data, we are moving the data collection deadline to May 20, 2015. As a result, we will not have a conversation around the collective data at the May 13th job-alike. We recognize that you have been focusing your efforts balancing the many end-of-the-year activities, and want to give you the time necessary to complete this.

The Wisdom of Hubbard
I recently stumbled upon a commencement address given by author and artist Neil Gaiman, to the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. I found it entertaining and inspiring, and right now that may be something you need as the year is wrapping up. It’s a reminder to enjoy the ride, wherever it takes you. My favorite bit comes near the end when Gaiman says, “So be wise because the world needs more wisdom, and if you cannot be wise pretend to be someone who is wise and then just behave like they would.” That is fantastic, wise advice for all of us at whatever point in our journeys we happen to be. I hope you enjoy it.
