All's Well That Ends Well
It's all about the Bard
Thoughts as we end Fall Semester
AP Literature students are also tackling a Shakespeare play, The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. Shakespeare has had an important impact on the development of the English language and literature. This Elizabethan playwright showed the versatility of the English language through his witty plays and memorable poetry.
Ninth graders are reading and analyzing the characteristics of epic poetry and focusing on learning the patterns of The Hero's Journey and other Archetypes as we close this semester. The journey of Odysseus was a 10 year trial that led to many rewards. Kind of like fall semester!
Nelson Mandela
During his 27 years imprisonment, Mandela cherished a smuggled copy of Shakespeare's Complete Works. He and other inmates read and re-read their one copy, annotating and signing their names on next to favorite passages. Mandela signed his name next to this quote from Julius Caesar:
"Cowards die many times before their deaths; The valiant never taste of death but once."
Shakespeare many phrases we still use
Shakespeare uses a Knock-Knock joke in Act 2 of Macbeth. He is credited with creating many phrases that we still use today. bated breath
dead as a doornail
eating me out of house and home
good riddance
strange bedfellows
wear my heart on my sleeve
what's done is done
the naked truth --and many more--
