Upcoming Suzanna Guzmán Assembly
Dear Linwood E. Howe Families,
On March 13th, students have an assembly with Suzanna Guzmán. Her website notes that she is a mezzo-soprano opera singer originally from East Los Angeles who has performed in many operas and been recognized many times over for her talent and accomplishments. She is a winner of the San Francisco Opera, Opera Guild, a national finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National competition, and a Grammy nominee for Best Classical Recording. Guzmán created a one-woman show entitled Don’t be Afraid! It’s Just Opera to bring to elementary school students in the area to make this art form accessible and enjoyable to a wider audience. For this work, Guzmán has been awarded with a handful of honors including the 2012 Hispanic Scholarship Foundation’s Mentor of the Year Award, the 2013 Mexican American Foundation award for Woman of the Year, and the 2015 Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Nederlander Organization.
More about the program from Suzanna Guzmán’s website (https://www.suzannaGuzmán.com/book-dont-be-afraid-its-just-opera.html):
In a brisk paced, entertaining and interactive 40-minute format, Don't be Afraid! gives students and adults alike, a first glimpse into the world of opera. Students learn and experience first-hand the feels and sounds of this majestic art form and even 'learn-by-doing' the whys and hows of opera performance. The audience is an integral part of the performance. From using their imaginations to singing like opera singers, to performing onstage with Suzanna, Don't Be Afraid! It's just Opera, offers a unique experiential learning opportunity. Using excerpts from the most popular operas "Carmen", "Barber of Seville", "Madame Butterfly", Suzanna removes the stigma and reveals the magic!
Here are a few questions you can ask your student about the performance:
1. What do you think opera is and did the assembly match what you thought?
2. How is classical music similar to and different from other types of music you and your family and friends might listen to?
2. What was your favorite part of the assembly?
3. What ideas or feelings did you get from watching Suzanna Guzmán sing?
*Information prepared by the Lin Howe PTA Equity Committee. Email linhoweequity@gmail.com to get involved.
