February 13, 6 pm - Canyon Vista Cafeteria
Canyon Vista Middle School invites the parents of 5th grade students to a parent meeting to discuss the 6th grade course selection sheet, and all the options available to 6th grade students entering middle school. Specifically, we will be discussing the option of taking a language (Spanish, French, German, Chinese) course or Mustang Discovery (rotation of Study Skills, Technology, and Leadership). We will provide a description of each course, and answer questions. We encourage all 5th grade parents to attend this meeting, as this will be an important decision to make regarding the option of taking a high school level course during the transition year to middle school, and determining if this is the right decision for your child. We will also be available to discuss the PE credit option of taking Wellness Education or Dance. In addition, we can answer any questions regarding the Fine Arts (Art, Band, Choir, Orchestra, and Theater Arts) options, as well.
The next event advertised in the letter from me is the 5th grade Mustang Orientation for parents and students. We have this meeting scheduled for Tuesday, March 21 at 6 pm. Can you please let me know if this meeting conflicts with any events at your campus?

Engineers Needed!
Calling all ENGINEERS! Engineering Day is coming up on February 24th. We don't want to miss any of you! Our sign-up deadline has been extended to February 13th. Please sign-up today to participate! Here's the link. https://goo.gl/forms/uj4jEC3y447MKA023
You can help make Engineering Day great even if don't think your job is quite exciting enough to thrill an audience of students. Consider engineering topics you can explain that will be engaging and relevant. Here are some suggestions.
- How does a hybrid automobile engine work and help our environment?
- Why don't we need wires to connect our phones or our computers (to the wall) anymore? How does the cloud work? How many satellites are orbiting earth right now?
- How do wind turbines produce electricity? How does a dam produce electricity?
- What technology advances have allowed computers to shrink from big desktops to handhelds?
- What engineering discoveries have come out of the space program (NASA)?
- How has the development of plastic transformed our culture?
- What modern elements of automobile construction have had the most impact on our way of life?
- How has engineering impacted food science - both negatively and positively?
Contact our volunteer coordinator Erica Gant with any questions or if you want to help but you're just not sure how: eegant@gmail.com
Thank you for being a part of this exciting day for our students!
