Poe's Early Life
Edgar Allan Poe was born to on the road actors who died before he was three years old. After his father abandoned their family, his mother passed away and Poe and his siblings were split up and sent to live with different families. It's believed that his father also passed, shortly after his mother. Poe stayed in contact with his brother throughout his life mostly through letters but was distant with his sister.
Poe's Work
Edgar Allan Poe's writing falls into Gothic Literature. Some of his famous work being "The Raven", "The Masque of the Red Death" , and "Annabel Lee." Poe's work is somewhat based of his life from always being surrounded by death sickness. In his writings he confronts the dark side of human behavior and presents surrealism in his writing.
Influence and the Gothic Genre
Edgar Allen Poe made contributions to America that went far beyond the contribution of his literature contributions. He supported both literature and art, and education in literature. He helped establish magazines and newspapers as well as the American literary and art scene. These contributions greatly assisted the American public and establish American art and literature. Edgar Allan Poe's work inspired many of today's modern Gothic writers. His work is also studied throughout many high school and collage courses. Some notable writers that were influenced by Poe were Oscar Wilde, Stephan King, and Tim Burton.
