Lice Checks
As we prepare for Spring Break and fun with family and friends, please keep in mind a few helpful reminders. Every year the health office is called on to assist families with head lice. Although they transmit NO illness, and they cause NO infection or disease, they do cause concern in parents. This can be a sensitive issue and we strive to protect all students' privacy. Please see below for suggestions.
Parents are encouraged to check through their child’s hair every week. Head lice tend to be a silent visitor, therefore early detection makes treatment much easier. Head lice are usually passed from person to person by direct head to head contact. Occasionally, they are passed by sharing personal items such as combs, brushes, hats, coats, scarves, helmets, barrettes, hair ties, and bandanas. When planning a *sleep over*, please consider sending your child with his or her own sleeping bag and own pillow. You may also want to consider the purchase of your child’s own helmet for sports or activities that require this. These few ideas can assist with prevention, and with early detection.

Message From the Principal
Our goal is simple: To connect students with a trusted adult and multiple peers at the school.
We will meet in our family groups once per month for 30 minutes a session, which will give us 3 meetings before the school year ends. Meetings will be focused on relationship-building and fun! For example, in the first meeting, students will decorate small pictures of paws and tell the rest of the family groups about themselves using the paw as a focal point. As families get to know each other, they may spend the time playing kickball, drawing, playing board games, talking, or something else that works for the group. This is not an academic time, but we believe the positive relationship time with each other will help students focus and feel more confident in themselves while learning. Students will also get a postcard from their Family Group Staff Member sometime during the year.
Family groups fit in beautifully with our school mission statement: At Jackson, we are a family community which embraces a tradition of excellence that fosters emotional, social, and academic growth in a culture where everyone is happy, welcomed, included, and challenged.
For more on the importance of relationships for students, here is a clip of Oprah's recent 60 Minutes segment.
For more information about family groups, please see this helpful website, but note that they meet more often than we will be meeting.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have. As with any new initiative, there may be some bumps or hiccups as we get started. However, the goal makes it worth any growing pains we need to get through!

Oregon Battle of the Books, Grades 3 - 5
By Coach Kelsey Cleveland
Once upon a time Josh, Joseph, Reed, and Taylor came together in their shared love of books to form an Oregon Battle of the Books team called the Bookbusters. When their noses were not buried in a good book, these 5th grade boys could be found in the Jackson Academy.
To prepare for battle, there were 16 wonderful books to read. Next, they had to win to four battles against their own Jackson school mates, including an exciting final battle in the library. After they earned the right to represent Jackson the regional tournament, the Bookbusters did everything they could to prepare for the next three weeks. The four boys wanted to make Jackson Elementary School proud.
On Saturday, March 17, the Bookbusters and their families gathered at Witch Hazel Elementary School for the regional tournament. The preliminary round of the tournament divided the 19 teams into pools of three teams each. At this stage, the goal was to earn as many points as possible. Wins and losses did not count. The 8 teams with the highest number of points would go on to the single elimination round of the tournament.
Representing Jackson, the Bookbusters first beat the Demon Readers 43-22. Next, they battled the Orenco Masters of Reading winning 40-30. By earning 83 points, they had earned more points than any other team and were the #1 seeds going into the single elimination rounds. In the Elite Eight round, they beat the Page Flippers decisively 43-22. In the final four, they faced the Orenco team for a second time winning an even tighter battle 34-29.
Jackson Elementary Bookbusters were in the finals! The stakes were high as the winner would go on to the state tournament. Facing off against Rosedale, the boys competed hard in an exhausting battle with 32 questions, double the usual. After taking the lead after the first half of the battle, the boys eventually lost.
Congratulations to the Bookbusters for making Jackson Elementary School proud!
