Counselor's Corner
I take a big sigh as I write this, as I think we all need a deep breath of hope, of peace of mind, and of “normalcy.” This week, a teacher brought a folder to me with writing samples that her students had written. The writing assignment was for students to think about how they have personally been affected by the pandemic. I greatly appreciated that this teacher did not share any identifying information in these writing samples. She just wanted me to see what these students have carried with them for the past year and a half. I read each of them carefully, and I was left feeling a little sad, quite weary, and interestingly hopeful. While I believe in the resilience of children, I also believe that it is important to acknowledge where they are and where they have been. I see it, I hear it, I feel it… a collective weariness due to the events of the past and the uncertainty of the future.
So what can we do to help support our students? As parents, you are the experts on your children, but you are not alone in this quest to support them. One of the ways we can do that here at Gray Stone is through our extra-curriculars. Today, we had the first meeting of our “Minds Matter” Club. The goal of this club is to promote mental health awareness and to reduce the stigma around mental health issues. Our next meeting is on Thursday, September 30th at 8am in room 102. Please help us pass the word! In addition, I wanted to share a few resources that you may find helpful… Click here to learn more about easing the transition back to school. Click here to learn more about how to support teens’ mental health, and here to read more about how to build resilience in our students. Lastly, click here to watch a video clip about positive psychology and how we can instill elements of this within our students.
Be well,
Mrs. Allred-McGee
