Lead Learner Highlights
We hope you enjoyed the Thanksgiving Break. We had a productive week with combined music rehearsals in preparation for the upcoming concert, visitors from China, and students engaged in a variety of learning experiences. We are headed into a busy but fun time of year. King Philip has adopted several families from the West Hartford Community who are in need of a little extra help making this year a “happy holiday." This provides a wonderful opportunity for our staff and students to work together in spreading kindness through action. Thank you for your continued support in helping where you can.
As we enter the mid-point of the 2nd quarter, please check in with your child about their progress. If students need a quiet place to study they can sign up for our school homework club or attend our Saturday Academy to get caught up on work. Just reach out to your child's MA teacher or team leader for more information.
We are looking forward to connecting with many of you during the upcoming 7th-grade concert and hope to see you at the cocoa and cookie event follow it (see information below). Be sure to add your congratulatory music note to the wall and support our PTO (more information below).

Be The One to Recycle thoughtfully -- Send in those Film Plastics
Film plastics - they are everywhere. Plastics are commonly used for packaging, bagging groceries or retail items, dry cleaning bags, food packaging (clean and dried), newspaper sleeves, and bread bags. Film plastic is not a waste for the incineration or landfill disposal processes, nor can film plastics be recycled with our mixed materials collected curbside. Plastic films have their own recycling stream.
With this challenge, we hope to bring awareness to this type of recycling for Plastic Films. Starting on November 15th America Recycles Day. King Philip has joined the Trex Film Plastic Challenge, where the students at King Philip will learn about the value of recycling in a fun way by collecting as much eligible plastic films as possible and hopefully building new family recycling habits along the way. Trex is a leading recycler for plastic films to produce synthetic building materials commonly used for decks and outdoor structures.
The film plastics that we collect will be delivered to ShopRite of West Hartford on Kane street. Public Works partners with recycling and sustainability initiatives such this one. ShopRite is valued business in the West Harford Community and is committed to improving our environment by supporting sustainable waste material management practices. We are happy as well as fortunate to have this partnership.

"Public Act 16-189
We believe that it is vital for all students in West Hartford Public Schools to be able to efficiently and effectively use digital tools that empower them in all phases of the learning process, including research, problem solving, content creation, communication, and collaboration. We also believe that we must be committed at all times to protecting students' privacy and providing them with a powerful and safe educational experience. To that end, the West Hartford Public Schools follow the legal requirements of Public Act 16-189 to promote the safety and security of all students and staff.
In compliance with Connecticut State Law, we update online programs used within the district that house student data. The programs may be used district-wide, in a very small number of classrooms, or with individual students. The list will be updated each time the district enters into a new contract where student data is housed. For more information on the specifics of Public Act 16-189 and updates of vendor agreements, visit www.whps.org/pa189."
