In the late 1700s Euro-Americans settlers began using springs to produce salt. Salt was very valuable and more important for preserving food. Many people came to the area to make a fortune by making salt. People had to start bringing in wood from different places because they were running low on salt and needed wood to make barrels. The salt industry badly needed wood for fuel and making barrels to ship and hold salt.

They were running low on coal for fuel so they had to cut down trees for wood. They eventually ran out of wood so people had to start bringing wood to them.
