Silicon
The flameless burning element
Silicon in the Earth
I am a very important element. Did you know that you have silicon inside of you? I work with calcium to keep your skeleton strong and healthy. I also make up about 25.7% of the Earth's crust by weight. Together, me and oxygen make up 75% of the Earth's crust. silicon is the second most abundant element in the Earth's crust, right behind oxygen.
Silicon Oxides
I exist in the Earth's mostly as silicon dioxide. I am found largely in silicon oxides such as sand, quartz, rock, crystal, amethyst, agate, flint, opal, and jasper.
What silicon is used for
Silicon is a metalloid
Group: Carbon
My symbol is Si and my atomism number is 14. I have a atomic mass of 28. I have 14 protons, 14 electrons, and 14 neutrons. I melt at 1414 degrees Celsius and I boil at 3265 degrees Celsius. My normal phase (state) is a solid. I have 5 isotopes. My biggest isotope is 32 and my smallest isotope is 28.
The human who discovered me is Jons Jacob Berzelius. I was discovered in Sweden. My name comes from the Latin word "silicis" which means "flint".
