For Heaven's Sake
Our Lady Queen of Heaven School - September 2017
From the Principal's Desk
Our Lady Queen of Heaven School began its 59th year filled with excitement and anticipation. We welcomed 642 students to campus and several new faculty members. This year we will celebrate with our theme: Our Joy in Christ. Opening Hearts of Faith, Leading as Disciples, Excelling in Scholarship, and Sacrificing of Self by becoming more compassionate, understanding, loving and forgiving of one another. We will continue to strive to lead our students in faith through education and by example.
The 2017 ā 2018 School Year started off in an unusual matter. We had a leak that caused us to cancel school for a day. Harvey posed a threat to our area so we lost 3 more days of school. We are now into our 3rd week of 5 full days of classes and the students and staff are all now in the swing of a normal school year.
The football team is progressing and working hard along with the cheerleaders, Jazzline and the Baronettes, and the volleyball teams are doing well! We celebrated our opening Mass on September 8, where we rededicated ourselves to the mission of OLQHS. This past weekend the 7th and 8th grades had their opening dance and we celebrated the Heavenly Fish Fest. It was an exciting day of fishing, family and fun! What a busy start to the fall! I look forward to the many more school events and celebrations that are yet to come this year!

3rd Grade Mystery Reader!
Mrs. Link's 3rd graders were so excited to have their first "Mystery Reader," Connie Houssiere, come read their story of the week, "Yoon and the Jade Bracelet"!
Firefighters and Fiddles!
Pre-K explored the letter F with a guest speaker who had two roles: a Firefighter and a Fiddler!
Joseph Ward, a Pre-K student, invited his father to show-and-tell his firefighter uniform and to play his fiddle. The students were eager to ask questions, such as "Why do we have so many fires?", "Why do you wear boots?", and "Can you play the itsy-bitsy-spider on your fiddle?". The students were thoroughly engaged and had a wonderful time listening to Mr. Ward play his fiddle!
Algebra News!
In Algebra 1, the 8th graders are learning about the slope of a line with Mrs. Trahan. We have discussed many real world examples of slope all around us such as skiing, grading of roads, pitches in roofs, etc. We have studied the four ways to find slope by a graph, an equation, a table, and two coordinates. We have learned how to graph lines by formulating a table. We are looking forward to begin graphing lines by the slope-intercept form, point-slope form, and x- and y-intercepts. Soon, we will be analyzing the difference between the slopes of parallel lines and perpendicular lines.
Saints Visit School
Students from St. Louis Catholic High School visited our carpool lines on Tuesday, September 26th as part of their Homecoming week! It was wonderful to see our OLQHS alumni back on campus!
The Art World
The year has just begun and we already have a winner in the Artsonia Hall of Fame--Addison Acord in 2nd Grade. Great job, Addison! Remember to be in the Artsonia Hall of Fame you must have at least 3 pictures published, 5 members of your fan club, and 5 approved comments on your artwork. It's Easy!!
Kindergarten has started the year learning about lines (drew a spider and its web) and colors (warm colors--red, orange, and yellow; and cool colors--blue, green, and purple).
First Graders drew a Self Portrait and an American Flag (for the Veterans of Foreign Wars Art Contest).
Second Grade learned to find the six basic shapes in the "real" world and are just beginning their Fall Trees (you will be amazed!).
Third Graders learned about the three basic designs of a composition--formal, informal, and radial--and used the basic shapes to show one of the designs. They are also drawing insects such as the Japanese Beetle or a Stink Bug and coloring with pencil colors.
My fabulous Fourth Graders learned to draw their hand, and some of them, their shoes. They are now learning to draw EXACTLY what they see by looking at an upside down drawing of a familiar cartoon character and drawing it UPSIDE DOWN. WOW!!
My 7th and 8th Grade Art/Band/Chorus Students are drawing, and then painting on a gourd, a Day of the Dead Design to honor a family member or friend that has passed away. The masks are going to be in our play this year, "Fiddler on the Roof" in the Dream Sequence with our dancers. My Art/Library Science Students selected a painting by a Great Artist which they are painting on a canvas with acrylic paint. They are looking great!
Please be sure that you have officially signed up for Artsonia, otherwise your student's artwork is hidden on the website. If you need instructions on how to sign up, please contact me: bfoshee@olqhs.org. Two thirds of the comments online are about Kindergarten through Second Grade Artwork--what about the others? The older students going into their teenage years need even more affirmation than the younger ones. Please comment on your older child's work--no matter what he/she says--they want your approval. It only takes a moment. They are worth it!!
Remember, we are being creative, making messes, and having FUN!

asbestos statement
Each year parents must be informed that the school has complied with all national standards regarding asbestos on campus. Certain vinyl floors and the panels that are below the quad windows will have to be handled appropriately if ever replaced. Our report indicates that existing asbestos is in good condition and we have the highest rating given. You are welcome to examine the asbestos file in the office if desired.
