HOS Highlights

“We succeed only when students succeed. That is our goal. That is our passion. That is our work.” Nate Davis
What's new?
- Remember: NO Leadership Academy this week.
- Recording link: Here is the link for last week's recording. This focuses on the Strategic Leadership group only because we cannot record all breakout room sessions.
- Homework: Let us take that right off your plates. We realize that you are very busy and having homework on top of your everyday priorities and state strategy meetings is too much to ask. Sorry we didn't realize that earlier. Please put your Leadership Academy #2 work aside and we will continue our work on these projects during our next Leadership Academy Meeting on October 23rd.
- Thank you to the leaders who signed up to work on the HOS Summit--we will reach out to you soon. We look forward to your ideas and expertise! Please email Brandi Maynard if you are not currently on this list, but would like to be included.

Leadership Video: Change Management vs. Change Leadership
Questions to Ponder
1. Have you instituted a change within your school that has had difficulty "sticking" or having significant impact? If so, what do you think may have contributed to that?
2. How might you consider "change leadership" in helping to institute or revisit a recent change?
3. How might you utilize this video to help other leaders within your school have greater change impact?
**Please note, we will not discuss this video message because we are not meeting on Friday. Feel free to share this video with other leaders in your school for begin rich discussion and dialogue.
HOS PD - What's on the Horizon?
Leadership Academy #2
Remember, we do not have a meeting this week. Next week the first hour will be a traditional HOS meeting. Then we will take a break and continue working in our small groups on the following:
- Chunking down the learning into Succinct Steps
- Appreciative Learning Dialogue Questions
School Services/Department Updates
iTeach@k12 Updates
HOS Survey on Surveys
Thank you to the 19 Heads of School that responded to the brief survey on Teacher Surveys. Here is a quick review of the responses:
· 6 of the 19 HOS indicated that they have requirements outside of their own use of the satisfaction data; five of them have needs for external stakeholders including BOD or authorizer and one uses an additional teacher survey for internal use.
· Nearly all respondents indicated that the survey is good as it is.
· Three additional comments emphasized the importance of timely results from the survey, a request to see the data broken up by teacher grade levels including k-5 and MS and finally feedback to ensure there is adequate space for comments.
Cheers to You!
- Caroline, and the Nevada Virtual team- I am always so impressed with the great programs that are coming out of Nevada. I read Monday’s Homeroom and once again you are leading the charge of putting Student’s First with your exciting STEM programs. Excellent work!
- Thank you to the HOS who told me that Leadership Academy Homework was too much. No more homework--thanks to your feedback. Now, if only our students were so lucky!
- Thank you to the leaders who are speaking out about their experiences with PD this year: Katrina Abston, Nich Sutherland, Perry Daniel, and Faith Shanholtzer. We appreciate your willingness to share.
- Kelly and the IDVA team--The IDVA office is bright, cheerful, and filled with artifacts that speak volumes about their positive school culture. Kelly's husband is even pitching in--he made some fabulous display boards! The IDVA office makes you feel like IDVA is THE place to be!

2015/16 Leadership Academy Content and Focus
2015-2016 Leadership Standards and Practices
Leadership Academy #1- "Explore U": YOU are the focus of Leadership Academy #1 entitled, Explore "U". Throughout the first seven weeks we will focus on your strengths as indicated in the Myers-Briggs assessment most of you took in January, 2015. Throughout the cycle you will build upon your strengths and learn to leverage those strengths to minimize weaknesses.
Leadership Academy #2- "Build It and They Will Come": Your knowledge and expertise will be leveraged to build out content for one of the leadership strands. Each School leader chooses one standard to work with over the course of the 7 week cycle. The goal will be to codify your expertise within the leadership strand to build a complete leadership Academy cycle in your area chosen area.
Leadership Academies #3-5-: Once the content is built, you will choose one strand to focus on for the remaining cycles. Choice is built into the process and we would like you to choose two standards. We suggest you work with your RVP/DRVP to choose one leadership strand that you would like additional support in. The strands include: Strategic Leadership, Instructional Leadership, Community, Human Resources, and Organizational Management.
