Students Create Winning Art for League of Women Voters Contest
Comal ISD students, years away from being eligible to vote, recently created eye-catching posters to encourage their fellow Americans in Comal County to vote in upcoming elections. The posters were created as part of a contest sponsored by the League of Women Voters (LWV) of the Comal Area to increase voter participation in the county.
Posters created by four students were selected as contest winners:
· Kindergarten – 2nd Grade: Henry Agnese – Oak Creek Elementary
· 3rd – 5th Grade: Miranda Aleman – Morningside Elementary
· 6th – 8th Grade: Eric Potter – Danville Middle
Abigail Greissinger from Bill Brown Elementary was the contest’s overall winner for best art poster.
Each of the winners received cash awards.
The art was required to include one of two statements: My Future’s in Your Hands – Vote! And Be My Voice – Vote! Also, the posters could not be partisan or advocate for a specific candidate or party.
“This contest was a chance for our students to learn more about the value of democracy in our community and our country,” says Carla Schumann, Comal ISD’s director of Fine Arts. “Our art programs give our students a tremendous opportunity to express themselves while making a difference in their community.”
Winning entries will be reproduced as posters and notecards by the LWV for in advance of future elections.
The Show Must Go On! Comal ISD Theatre Advances in UIL One Act Play
Our High Schools each participated in UIL 4A, 5A, and 6A One Act Play competition this March. This is a culminating competition for our theatre companies as it encompasses all elements of a stage production and is 100% student run. We are so proud of each of our students for working as a team to create a truly special product and to our directors for their vision! We continue to cheer on Canyon Lake High as they will compete at Region UIL on April 15 at Gregory Portland High.
