ideastream Education hopes to provide easily-implemented resources to support your students in the coming weeks. In this time of crisis, we will find that we lean on our neighbors more than ever. Let’s explore what it means to be a community. Below please find several standards-aligned activities and resources related to community.
Pre-Kindergarten
Being a Good Citizen - In this segment, Abby Brown learns from students what it means to be a good citizen at their school. Students demonstrate how taking responsibility for jobs in the classroom is a privilege! We can take it one step further by encouraging children to do a simple chore around the home. Learn more.
Grades K-2
Arthur’s Park Game - Practice taking action to improve your world by playing Arthur's Park, a digital game from the PBS KIDS series Arthur. In order to create a new park in an empty lot, Arthur has to make a speech to raise awareness, hold a bake sale to make money, and then equip the park. As children play each round, set in a board game format, they accumulate stars that they use to “buy” what they need for a new park. Know Ohio: How Ohio’s Cities Got Their Names - Explores how some Ohio cities were named after settlers, figures in history, other cities from around the world or by incorporating words from other languages. More unusual city names were created by local lore or the personal preference of the settlers. What is the name of your city? Why do you think that’s the name of your city? If you could rename the city, what would you name it and why? Know Ohio is a special segment from NewsDepth, a weekly interactive television program produced by WVIZ/PBS ideastream, breaks down the biggest news stories into teachable lessons. Learn more.
Caring For Our Children
As Governor DeWine said, “big problems can worry little people”. Many of our young people will be experiencing heightened levels of stress and anxiety given our current crisis.
