Notes from the Nurse Kristal Mathews, RN
Say goodbye to November and Hello December!
Hays CISD Student Health Services is partnering with Hays County Brown Santa again this year.
This year we will be collecting new unused rolls of wrapping paper to help wrap all the donated toys this year. There is no better way to show Holiday Spirit than to help others. If you would like to donate wrapping paper, please bring the wrapping paper to the KES Nurse clinic BEFORE December 9th.
December is Toy Safety Month. As we get closer to the Holiday gift giving season; keep these things in mind when shopping. Below are some on how to keep your kids safe this Holiday Season:
1.Buy age-appropriate toys and gifts.
2.Remove loose ribbons, tags or strings to avoid choking hazards.
3.Monitor use of toys with projectiles.
4.Is it well-made?
5.Make sure there are no choking hazards.
6.Is it noisy? Loud noises can scare small children and pets.
7.Read labels. Is it non-flammable, non-toxic?
8.Clean up. Avoid trips, falls and those Lego injuries.
Vision/ Hearing Referrals
Vision/ Hearing referrals are coming home in your child’s daily folders between now and Christmas Break. If your child failed either their vision or their hearing screening, they will receive a referral. Please take a look at them and follow up with the appropriate provider. Please return all referrals to Nurse Mathews once they have been evaluated by their provider.
Illness Reminder
I am hopeful everyone was able to stay healthy over the break. Flu season is still ongoing and heavy this year. If your child needs to stay home, please email KES.attendance@hayscisd.net and let the office know.
Consider keeping your child at home for an extra day of rest and observation if he or she has any of the following symptoms:
● Very stuffy or runny nose and/or cough
● Mild sore throat (no fever, no known exposure to strep)
● Headache
● Stomach ache
Definitely keep your child at home for treatment and observation if he or she has any of these symptoms:
● Fever (greater than 100 degrees and your child may return to school only after his or her temperature has been consistently below 100 degrees, by mouth, for a minimum of 24 hours without the aid of NSAID or pain reliever like acetaminophen)
● Vomiting (even once)
● Diarrhea
● Chills
● General malaise or feelings of fatigue, discomfort, weakness or muscle aches
● Frequent congested (wet) or croupy cough
To help prevent the flu and other colds, teach your children good hygiene habits:
● Wash hands frequently
● Do not touch eyes, nose or mouth
● Cover mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing, use a paper tissue, throw it away and then wash hands
● Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
Colds are the most contagious during the first 48 hours. A child who has a fever should remain at home until "fever free" for a minimum of 24 hours. Often when a child awakens with vague complaints (the way colds and flu begin), it is wise to observe your child at home for an hour or two before deciding whether or not to bring them to school. Your child should be physically able to participate in all school activities on return to school. Keeping a sick child at home will minimize the spread of infections and viruses in the classroom.
As a school, we have our custodians and the night time cleaners disinfect surfaces, door knobs, and desks on a daily basis. We are also ensuring that there is soap and hand sanitizer in all dispensers and encouraging everyone to remind students about the importance of hand washing. Please also take the time to click on the links below for flu guides for parents from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
● The Flu: A Guide for Parents
● Talking to Children About Flu
If your child must miss school due to illness and they see a doctor, please make sure to get a medical excuse to provide the school. We ask that if your child is absent for 3 or more days you provide a doctor’s note.
I also want to personally ask you to inform the school (school nurse and/or KES Attendance) if your child is diagnosed with the flu. All Hays CISD school nurses help monitor the prevalence of influenza by submitting numbers to the Hays County Health Department weekly.
Thank you in advance for helping make this year at school as healthy as possible!
Let’s have a great week!
