Greetings March!
Greetings Newport Families!
We had a busy month here at Newport. Our Family reading Night was a hit. Students and families enjoyed activities that were based on our Frog theme that coincided with Leap Year. It was so nice to see student writing throughout the building too. Looking ahead we have IAR testing.
Illinois Assessment of Readiness is our state testing for students in grades 3rd - 8th. Our 3rd - 5th graders will begin testing March 6th and finish the week before we leave for spring break.Your 3rd - 5th grader will take tests in Reading and Math. 5th grade also takes a Science assessment. Please make sure your child gets enough rest and is at school on time each day as testing will begin at 9:00.
5Essentials Survey is Still Open
Please take a few minutes to complete the 5Essentials Survey. Your participation in the parent portion of the survey will help us understand the conditions at our school and guide our improvement. A report will only be generated if we have at least 20% parent participation. If you are a parent of a student at multiple schools in the district, please take the survey once for each school. Click the link below to take the survey. The survey should take only about 10 minutes of your time. Email jpelling@bpd3.or or lgarris@bpd3.or once you have completed the survey. Your child's name will get put into a drawing to win a gift card.
No Outside Food or Drink Allowed
We have been seeing an increase in students bringing in outside food such as Dunkin and Starbucks in the morning when they get off the bus. As a reminder we do not allow students to bring in outside food other then what is in their lunchboxes.
No outside food deliveries from parents or food delivery drivers such as Uber Eats, and Door Dash will be allowed in school. If food is not part of your child's cold lunch that is packed in their lunchbox, they are not allowed to bring in any outside store bought food or beverages in to - go containers such as Dunkin, Subway, Starbucks and Mcdonald's, just to name a few. If you forget to send a lunch with your child you can bring in their lunchbox with food packed inside. However, it is disruptive to the school day to have a food delivery sent to the child as the food doesn't always arrive when it is the child's scheduled lunch times. It is also an issue of safety to have food delivery drivers drop off food for students. Your child can always get a hot lunch each day if they forget their lunch. If you wish to treat your child, wait for after school. Thanks for your understanding.
PTO Monthly Update
The Newport Elementary School PTO would like to say thank you to all the students, families and staff that came out to support us at our Winter Wonderland Ball - A Night Under the Stars! It was not only a great fundraiser, but all attendees really enjoyed themselves and had a blast! [Maybe insert a couple photos from the dance?]
The PTO would like to invite everyone to come join us at Culvers in Zion on Tuesday, March 12, 2024 from 4:30pm-7:30pm! Leave the cooking to Culver's that night and enjoy seeing your friends and teachers while you eat some delicious food. Please feel free to share the date and time with your friends and family! A portion of the proceeds raised that day go towards supporting the Newport Elementary School PTO.
Also, don't forget that the Newport PTO meets the first Thursday of every month at 5:30pm. This month we will be holding our meeting completely virtual so look for a link to be sent out the morning of March 7th.
If you are interested in helping the PTO, please don't hesitate to contact us at emailnewportpto@gmail.com or by attending our monthly meetings. Please know that you don't have to dedicate much of your time! All the parents and staff on the PTO know that your time is valuable, and we understand everyone has a busy schedule, but you don't have to volunteer for every event; even just a few minutes a month could help make a difference. Every little bit helps, so if you feel you could donate a couple items for a fundraiser, if you know you are good at decorating for events, if you have great fundraising ideas or even just ideas to help bring families and staff closer, we are open to any and all suggestions.
At the next PTO Meeting on March 7, 2024, the PTO will be discussing the final details for the Culver's night; a potential popcorn fundraiser for April; Teacher Appreciation Week and our Summer Kick-Off event in May!
We look forward to seeing you at the meeting!

Monthly Family Focus
Kagan Structures
During the course of the school year I will be providing you with information regarding reading, math and social emotional learning to help support your child at home. You are your child's first teacher. This month I want to talk to you about Kagan Structures.
This year all staff was training on Kagan Structures. Kagan is a cooperative learning structure based off of the 4 principles of this acronym PIES. P - Positive Interdependence, I- Individual Accountability, E - Equal Participation and S - Simultaneous Interaction. I have had the opportunity to see first hand the impact it has made on student engagement and learning thus far. Students are actively participating in cooperative learning in all classrooms. P.E., Art and Music are also using these structures during their lessons. At our most recent student monthly assembly the students participated in a Turn and Talk with your Elbow partner activity about ways to show kindness. Ask your child about the different Kagan Structures they use in their classes. Ask how they use Rally Coach or Think Park Share in their classrooms. I have also linked information from Dr. Kagan on the use of Kagan Structures and its background.

Tips from Mrs. Pelli, Administrative Assistant
If your child is out for a medical, vision or dental appointment, please bring (or email) me a Doctor’s note so the absence can be excused.
Please remember to call when your child is absent. If I do not answer my phone, you can leave a voice message with your name, your students name and the reason for their absence.
Fee statements went out this week. If you believe you qualify for free or reduced fees, please let me know and I can assist you with that process.
Registration for the 2024/2025 school year will begin soon! If you know that your child will not be attending Newport next year, please let me know.
Remember to follow us on Facebook and Twitter to get a glimpse of what's going on at Newport.
Tips from Ms. Schnettler, Health Clerk
School registration will be opening this month. Here are some important reminders for health records. When you register your child each year, all students must be up-to-date with their physical examinations and immunization requirements. Below find the link to the department of public health website with guidance on student immunizations and physical requirements.
