Note to all our walkers
Dear Parents/Guardians,
With the improved weather, we are noticing an increase in our walkers and bikers, which is so wonderful to see. We wanted to send a friendly reminder that our Crossing Guard is on duty and can begin crossing students from 7:45 am to 8:10 am. Before that time, there is no one to cross them on Westheimer Parkway, which is a high-traffic road. Hopefully, many of you have noticed our increased police presence in the mornings. We were able to add this support to help enforce drivers to adhere to the speed limit. We have recently observed students crossing Westheimer Parkway before the Crossing Guard is on duty. Please help us encourage students to wait to cross until 7:45 am so that they arrive safely to campus each morning.
Physical/Hard Copy Government-Issued Identifications
As Katy ISD continues its review of safety practices and protocols, it's essential to stress the significance of physical/hard copy government-issued identifications for accessing campuses/facilities, student registration, and student pickup. The district is strictly enforcing this requirement and will no longer accept paper or digital copies of driver's licenses, visas, and passports at any of its campuses or facilities, for these purposes. Katy ISD greatly appreciates the community's cooperation with these safety procedures and the ongoing partnership to maintain safe and secure environments across campuses.

Library Book News
We will be collecting students’ library books during the week of May 6th-May 9th. Please make sure your child brings his or her library book to school this week to return it.
If your child has lost or damaged their library book, please know that a replacement will need to be paid for. Please visit our Pay N’ Go website to pay for the book. We are unable to accept replacements books from Amazon or local bookstores. The books purchased for the Katy ISD library are of high-quality and designed for multiple circulations. Vendors also charge us for processing and cataloging the books so that they’re ready to be placed on the shelf upon arrival.
All damaged library books must be disposed of through Katy ISD property disposal; we are unable to allow any damaged books to be kept.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contract me. Your support in helping us collect the books for the upcoming summer break is greatly appreciated.

A friendly reminder – to be on the lookout for LICE.
Parents,
Please set a routine to check your student’s hair for lice and/or nits. Don’t wait for your student to be scratching.
Nits – or eggs – are very small – usually yellow/white in color and are attached to the hair; cannot be easily removed.
Lice – are about the size of sesame seeds, are tan/grayish color.
If you find lice - you will need to apply a lice shampoo/medicine that you can get over the counter. Then diligently remove nits with the nit comb. Re-treat in a week.
Notify the clinic that you have seen lice in your child’s hair.
For more information on Lice and Katy ISD’s policy regarding Lice, open the PDF below.
Is it ALLERGIES or AN EYE Infection?
Tis the season for pollen to cause eye allergy symptoms and pink eye to spread through classrooms.
What’s the difference between an EYE INFECTION and ALLERGIES?
Pink Eye or conjunctivitis or Eye Infection is very contagious and spreads easily among classmates. If your student has the following symptoms – please keep your student home and follow up with your health care provider for treatment.
Symptoms of an eye infection includes:
- Redness in the sclera (white of the eye), usually one eye
- Pain, feels “gritty” when blinky or “like sand in the eye”
- Thick yellowish drainage from eye
- Eyes matted shut in the a.m. “eye boogers”
Treatment and Return to School: Katy ISD requires students with eye infections to complete a full 24 hours of treatment with antibiotic eye drops before returning to school. See your health care provider to confirm this diagnosis and to get a prescription for antibiotics. Notify the clinic that your student is being treated for Pink Eye.
Allergies also irritate the eyes – symptoms for allergy eyes:
- Redness in the sclera (white of the eye), usually both eyes
- Itchy
- Clear, water type drainage. Drainage can also appear white and “stringy”
- Eyelid swelling
- Usually history of other allergy symptoms, like runny nose, sneezing
- Symptoms should improve after treatment with anti-histamines
Treatment for eyes irritated by allergies –
- Wash hands and rinse face when come indoors after being outside
- Change clothes/shirt when coming inside after playing outdoors
- Keep windows in home/car closed to lower allergy exposure
- Use a HEPA filter in bedroom
- Shower/shampoo hair before bedtime, so pollen is not getting on bedding
- Wear sunglasses outside
- Medications
- Oral – non-sedating antihistamines like Claritin, Zyrtec, Allegra, Zxyzal (Look for generic options!). At bedtime, try Benadryl
- Eye drops – Normal saline to rinse pollen from eyes or try over the counter antihistamine eyedrops such as Zaditor or Pataday. (Look for generic options!)
Best practice, is to consult your health care provider to develop you allergy action plan. There are many references to help explain and understand your doctor’s recommended plan of action, to include:
- WWW.AAAAI.ORG American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology
- WWW.ACAAI.ORG American College of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology
- WWW.AFAA.ORG Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America
If your student isn’t feeling well, please keep them home until they are well. If your student tests positive or is diagnosed with any communicable conditions such as Strep, Flu, COVID-19, ringworm, fifth’s disease, pink eye, hand foot and mouth to name a few, please contact the school's clinic, to review the return to school.
Monitor your students’ symptoms and follow Katy ISD’s 24-hour rule:
If your student has any of the following conditions, return to school is as follows:
- FEVER: Free of Fever (<100.0) for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol®) or ibuprofen (Motrin®). (All aspirin-containing products should be avoided).
- VOMITING/DIARRHEA: Food and liquids have been tolerated for at least 24 hours without vomiting and/or diarrhea, and without the use of medication to relieve symptoms.
- Students diagnosed with a contagious illness that is being treated with prescription medication (for example antibiotics for Strep throat or Pink Eye), must complete a minimum of 24 hours of the prescribed medication dosage prior to returning to school.
Absences should be reported online: Absence report can be found on Exley’s Website>Families>Absence Report or you can click here
CHANGE OF CLOTHES - Be sure to send your student with a change of clothes. Accidents happen! Your student will be more comfortable in their own clothing if a change of clothes is needed.
Any updates to your students’ medical conditions? Please contact the school clinic.

Student Early Pick Up
If you have a planned early pick up for your child, please be sure to notify their homeroom and switch teacher in advance so the student can be prepared with his/her belongings if they are out of the classroom at lunch/recess/specials at the time.
You must come prior to 2:45 p.m. Parents arriving after 2:45 p.m. will not be able to check their child out early.
Please be sure to bring your ID when checking out your child.
News from the School Counselor
Each month, we’ll send PurposeFull Pursuits to provide fun challenges you can pursue together! These are simple ways to intentionally reinforce the skills we are working on at school, while providing fun strategies to grow together as a family.
We invite you to make some memories and join in the fun!
Morning Drop Off
Our car rider drop-off routine begins at 7:50 a.m. For your child’s safety, we ask that there are
no drop-off's/students out of the car prior to this time. The bus drive, on the side of the
cafeteria/gym, is a “BUS DRIVE ONLY” in the morning and afternoon. Do not drop off or pick up your child from this drive or block this drive. It is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS for children and/or parents to maneuver around parked buses.
The car line will stop at the sign in our front drive indicating: Drop off and pick up line forms here. Cars will not pull up beyond this point until staff comes out and waves the line to move up at 7:50 a.m. Cars will stay in a single file line in the right-hand lane and allow JEE staff and safety patrol to unload the cars as they pull up to the front of the school. At 8:10 a.m. our tardy bell rings and instruction begins. Students must be in the classroom when this bell rings.
Children are expected to arrive at school on time and are expected to be in their classroom by 8:10 a.m. Any child entering the building after 8:10 a.m. will be considered tardy. If your child reports to school after the 8:10 a.m. tardy bell, he/she must report to the office before proceeding to class. Please plan for extra time on rainy/bad weather days as our car rider line is longer on these mornings. Please note, too, that the closer it gets to 8:10, the longer the line can get, so arrive early to ensure your child is not late.
Parking spaces out front are not for parent drop-offs. Parents parking to drop off students will be asked to get back in their cars and return to the drop-off line. Parking spots are for those needing to come inside to conduct school business.
Thanks for your understanding and cooperation to ensure a swift and safe drop-off in the mornings for our students.
Do not park in the fire lane at any time (marked by red curb), block driveways in the neighborhood or in front of fire hydrants. Please obey traffic laws at all times.
Afternoon Pick Up
The bus drive, on the side of the cafeteria/gym, is a “BUS DRIVE ONLY” in the morning and
afternoon. Do not drop off or pick up your child from this drive nor block this drive. It is
EXTREMELY DANGEROUS for children and/or parents to maneuver around parked buses.
Car Riders - Parents will be given a cardstock or plastic sign to use in order for teachers to
quickly identify students in the car rider lines. Place this sign on the visor of your vehicle each
day when you enter the car pick up line. This will assist us in expediting the process of our
parent pick up system. Replacement cards are readily available in the front office. If you do not have your card, you will be asked to park, come inside the school, present a picture ID, and
sign your child out. Several cars will be loaded at one time. Please drive to the station as
directed by the teachers on duty so that we may quickly load cars at dismissal time.
We ask that parents remain in their cars. Please do not park and walk across the pickup area to get your child(ren). This causes added congestion and delays and poses a safety hazard to the children and our staff. The front of the school has been designated as the PARENT DRIVE for picking up students at 3:20 p.m. Parents should not arrive prior to 2:45 pm. A SINGLE car line will be formed at that time. Please do not form a second line and block the entrance into our parking lot. At dismissal, teachers work with safety and security in mind, while loading students into cars. To ensure the correct person is picking up the children and for traffic safety, parents are asked to stay in their cars and go through the car pick up line to retrieve children.
Please be patient with us the first few days of school as we take our time to teach the students this process, so the line will move a little slower. We promise it will get much quicker. Safety is our top priority.
JEE Walkers
Who is a Walker:
Walkers are students who walk from our campus to their front door. If students are walking to a parked car, they will need to change to a car rider and be picked up in our car rider line.
Pre-K to First Grade walkers: Must have a parent to meet them at the dismissal spot or be walking with a sibling 2nd grade or older.
Dismissal spots listed below:
Back Walker: Must live behind the school
Cross Walker: Must live in Shadow Bend, Lamp Light Village, Kelliwood Links or Ashley House
Apartments. These are students crossing Westheimer Parkway.
East Side Walker: Must live in Kelliwood Pointe or Kelliwood Terrace.
Inclement Weather:
When weather is deemed inclement, a text message will be sent to those parents who
have subscribed to Remind letting them know. In this case, if your child has an inclement
weather dismissal plan in place, we will follow that. Please see our E-news on how to
subscribe to Remind.
For those students who are still walkers in inclement weather, they will not be released until staff deems it safe for them to exit the building or until a parent comes to the dismissal door and checks out the child with staff. Please note that is it is raining with no lightning and an umbrella will keep your child dry, we will follow normal dismissal.
Please make sure your walker always has an umbrella or poncho in his/her backpack.
New SMART Tag System
All Campus Volunteers
Katy ISD requires all volunteers serving on or off-campus during or after the instructional day to register with the district through its Raptor security system.
Once registered and approved, individual volunteers can:
· Sign up as a campus volunteer by completing the volunteer recruitment form provided by your campus organization(s) or contact your campus volunteer coordinator.
· Submit and track hours via their volunteer profile for every Katy ISD campus at which they volunteer
· The system also provides quick and easy submission of individual off-campus volunteer hours
Lunch Visitors
KISD limits lunch visitors to parents/guardians/grandparents (with form on file), and younger non-school aged siblings. Grandparents will not be allowed to eat with your child unless we have Lunch Visitor Form on file.
We ask that parents limit their number of lunch visits to no more than one time per week. Lunch time is a time for students to socialize with their classmates and continue to build peer social skills. If you have a stroller, please put it in the designated stroller lot prior to entering the cafeteria. Videos and photos may not be taken during lunch as not all students at Exley are allowed to have photos taken. Please have your ID when coming to the campus to eat lunch as you will need to have it to access the campus. Please leave through the front office when dismissed by the cafeteria staff. Please do not follow the line back to your child’s classroom. We do only have one lunch visitor table, so space is limited. Per district guidelines, visitors are not allowed to sit at the classroom tables.
Homework and Deliveries
Deliveries for items left/forgotten at home are only made at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. We ask that every effort be made to send your child’s items, including lunch, with him/her every day.
Items include homework, lunches, backpacks and snacks. These may be dropped off to the cart in the front foyer. Label the item with the child’s name, grade and teacher.
Parents bringing in lunch after 10am delivery will need to Raptor in and take the lunch down to the lunch table outside the cafeteria. It is the responsibility of the child to pick up the lunch. Every effort must be made to have lunches dropped off prior to the 10 a.m. delivery.
Balloons, flowers, and other things that cause distractions in the classroom will not be delivered.
Birthday Treats and Invitations
Per changes to district guidelines, no outside birthday treats (food, gift bags, etc.) can be brought in by students to be handed out to other students. Please do not send birthday treats or invitations to school with your student as they will not be handed out to other students. JEE will make your child’s birthday special by recognizing them on our morning announcements.
HOME ACCESS CENTER (HAC)
The Home Access Center provides an online grade book where parents and guardians can view helpful student information to support and guide their children through the educational process. From home or work, at any time of the day or night, parents can access the Web portal to track academic achievement.
E-mail links are also available throughout the portal so parents can communicate with the school and teachers.
