Description
The children's crusade was a march by hundreds of school students in Birmingham, Alabama May 2-5 in 1963 during the American Civil Rights Movement's Birmingham campaign. The march was initiated by Rev. James Bevel , the purpose of the march was to walk downtown and talk to the Mayor about segregation in their city. The marches were stopped due to the head of police "Bull Connor" who brought fire hoses to ward off the children and set police dogs after the children.
Civil Rights Movement
The Children's March is connected to the Civil Rights Movement because the children who participated in the march CHANGED the Civil Rights. They helped stop integration and motivate others to do the same.
More Info..
The Children's March was successful because it opened up a lot of peoples eyes, and was responsible for many new anti-segregation laws to be passed. During this even many children got arrested, attacked by dogs, sprayed with fire hoses, so children were getting hurt just because they wanted to March for their freedom and equality. This event can be connected today with all the laws being passed for equality, like gay marriage they protested and eventually got what they wanted. I feel that The Children's March was a very brave and courageous thing to do. Even little kids have a say in what they want their life to be like, and help find ways to make it better, and that's exactly what the children of Birmingham did.
