UOI 1: Who We Are
Central idea: Families and friends help us understand the importance of roles and responsibilities.

UOI Field Trip: Baltimore national Aquarium IN HOUSE Trip
how sharks, horseshoe crabs, snails, hermit crabs, and sea stars have adapted to their marine environment. Through the use of props and live animal encounters, students will investigate how sea animals move, eat, and protect themselves. As scientists, kg will continue to be inquireeres and investigate the similarities and differences between animal structures, features and behaviors of goldfish, guppies, water and land snails.

Math
- Students have been engaged in hands on activities building, learning and reinforcing their understanding of number order through matching, sorting, classifying and grouping.
- Through literacy and and games students have created word problems to answer the question, "how many?"
- In small groups, independent work and with paired lessons, students explored the concept of one-to-one correspondence with numbers and objects using manipulatives and picture cards.
- As inquirers students worked together to answer the questions "what if" and "I wonder if" to figure out how to connect cubes without them falling apart to make the number 100.
English Language Arts
- Building on listening and comprehension skills students have used drawings and illustrations to show their understanding of story details.
- Reading and writing words with short vowel "a" sounds (cat,sat,mat,bat,hat...)
- Making word families using short vowel "a". ("at" and "an")
- Practicing sight word recognition ( the, my, here, is)
- Practicing word segmentation by clapping out 1 and 2 syllables sounds.
In the writing center creating books to show cover,front,back, author and illustrator.
Building reading strategies in reading groups.
Beginning to read and write short sentences.

Science & Social Studies
Social Studies: Political Science
- Students have answered the question, "what is a family" by listing and sharing their thoughts about "What is like to have a family?' Through group discussions and stories, students shared that families are: fun, exciting, funny, silly, happy!
- Students are continuing to discuss their responsibilities at home and at school.
- Using writing prompts students are beginning to illustrate their roles and responsibilities at home and school addressing our second line of inquiry.
Science: Animals Two by Two:
- As scientists students are recording their observations of the similarities and differences between goldfish and guppies in their science journals.
- Using scientific tools like the magnifying glass students are learning terminology and making connections between ocean life.
- Science Vocab: fish, scales, fins, water, gills, oxygen, parts of body, behavior
