Bayrock’s Tips for Writing Successful Nonfiction for Kids
Introduction
Struggling to teach students how to write nonfiction texts? Worried that your class is bored with nonfiction in general? If you answered yes to either of the above questions, then you've found the right flyer! The following are Bayrock's Tips for Writing Successful Nonfiction for Kids, along with a brief explaination for each.
Writing Tips
- Tap into your Ew!, Phew!, and Cool! Find something interesting about your subject!
- Play with Words: Add puns, homonyms, onomatopoeia, alliteration. Make it interesting! (But also use in moderation)
- Be Conversational: Write in a more informal style, as if writing to a friend! Engage the reader with questions
- Try unusual formats: Why not try a mystery or puzzle?! Change it up.
- Link New Information to Something your Readers Already Know: You can do this by using similes and metaphors that refer to familiar things or by comparing through sizes of well-known objects
- Include activities: Large or small!
- Use Storytelling Techniques: While it’s important to be factual, you can also include the reader through engaging writing
- Narrow your Topic: Limit your focus to a certain aspect of something
- Use reliable sources: Primary sources are ideal. Fact-check using at least three sources for each piece of information.
- Do Photo Researh: Personal pictures are great. Let students use a school camera for research whenever possible!
