Read Across America Day
HCS is celebrating reading! Read Across America Day (3/2/24) first started as a celebration of Dr. Seuss, his books, and his birthday (March 2nd!). In 2019, the NEA rebranded and expanded their mission to focus on "A Nation of Diverse Readers" so it was less focused on one individual, and instead, an important message. The message? Students need books that provide both windows and mirrors if we are going to create more readers, writers, and people who feel included and recognized, and who understand that the world is far richer than just their experiences alone. (NEA Website) The focus is "empowering student voice, fostering inclusiveness, activating young citizens, celebrating indigenous people, exploring identity, exploring families and history, practicing empathy, cultivating compassion, inspiring stewardship, developing passion & perseverance, promoting respect, and building community." (Quite the list!) With that being said, we hope you will celebrate the wonder of your favorite books and celebrate storytelling as a family as we Read Across America today and every day!
As always, happy reading!
~Ms. Deal & Mrs. Pfluke
Dates to keep in mind coming up:
Spring BOGO Book Fair April 29th - May 3rd, with some special Library Club literacy fun events TBD! Unfortunately Scholastic does not allow BOGO Book Fairs in March, so it is important to note that there is no Book Fair during Parent Teacher Conferences this Spring. Stay tuned on ways you can come enjoy it though during this new date!
PBIS Character trait of the Month: EMPATHY
This month, students will be discussing the importance of empathy: when you see things from someone else's perspective- and making stronger, our classroom communities. Please feel free to talk with your students about the following ways we can show empathy at school:
Comfort a friend who is sad or upset
Be a good listener by letting people share, and not talking over them
Ask a person who you may not know very well, how they’re doing and try to get to know them
There are lots of benefits to being an empathetic friend at school! Empathy can help us to:
Learn more about our friends and teachers, and help us to understand them better
Build up our school community
Feel more connected to the people in our classes
Student Wellness
Student wellness is extremely crucial as it allows students to have better social integration, improved behavior, and increased resilience. When students are healthy mentally and physically, they tend to progress more in all other aspects of their lives. Here is a glimpse of the Student Wellness Event that was hosted on February 16th- it was a huge success!
