Miners in the Spotlight
Spring Rally - Our ASB did a great job planning, organizing, and hosting our Spring Rally. Cheer, dance, and our drumline performed at the rally. Our spring athletes and PICK winners were recognized and celebrated at the rally. It was a great display of school spirit!
Multilingual Celebration - This past Thursday, there was a Multilingual Celebration in the Mt. Whitney High School gym. 67 of our seniors were recognized for earning the state Seal of Biliteracy. 20 of our students were reclassified from English learner status to Fluent English Proficient status. We are so proud of our students!
PICK Recipients - Four outstanding students were nominated for PICK awards: Steven Adams, Jazlene Cano, Roman Anjel Jaramillo, and Janie Speer. Nine of our staff members were selected for PICK awards: Ashley Janelli, Learning Directors (Taylor, Elms, Gonzalez, and Davis), Adam Gabel, Jennifer Blakely, and Bethany Coppola. Tulare- Kings County Expo - Our STRONG and Media Arts Academies participated in the Tulare-Kings County Expo. Both academies brought home medals!
- STRONG Academy - Pedro Campos Reyes took first place in the CNA skills. In the Sports Medicine competition, Jaden OBosky took 3rd place, Korbin Ivey earned 2nd place,, and Danielle Benitez won 1st place. We had a clean sweep in the competition! Three of our STRONG industry partners - Dr. Hobbs, Michael Rodriguez, and Claudia Gonzalez - stopped by at the event to show support to our kids.
- Media Arts Academy - The following students earned 2nd place for their film, Fusion: Caleb Lickey, Bennet Martella, Timmy Le, Michael Weaver, Noah Powell, and William McAllister.
FFA Industry Tour & State Degrees - Our Ag Leadership students visited Sierra Nevada Farms for their April industry tour. The students learned about the hog industry from the very beginning (artificial insemination) to harvest for consumption.
Last week, we had 11 FFA students receive their California State FFA Degree. This is the highest degree that a student can earn while still in school. To receive this degree students must have earned or productively invested at least $1000 and worked at least 500 hours outside of class time on their SAE (Supervised Agricultural Experience) Project, and participated in at least 25 hours of community service.
FFA Pest Control Team - This past Saturday our Pest Control team won 1st place at the Reedley College FFA Field Day. Congratulations to Cyler Hunter, Alex Palomino, and Aislinn Weisner. Best wishes to them as they compete for the State Championship at Fresno State next weekend!

Sports Spotlights
Esports - Our SSBU Varsity team won their match against North High this past Tuesday in the opening round of the CIFs NASEF California State Championships.
Record Breaker - Jeremiah West earned a new school record in the 100-meter race at the West Coast Relays Invitational. He ran a 10.72! Congratulations, Jeremiah!
Athletic Signing Ceremony - Five of our outstanding athletes signed acceptance letters this past Monday night: Marsel Akins ( Football - Fresno State), Devin Ibarra (Cross Country - Fresno Pacific), Samantha Cloutier (Soccer - Azusa Pacific), Jennavee Campos (Softball - CSU East Bay), and Ashley Espino (Softball - CSU Bakersfield). We are so proud of our athletes! Thank you to their families, coaches, and teammates for celebrating, supporting, and recognizing our athletes.
Announcements and Reminders
CAASPP Testing (4/16-4/19) - Our juniors will take the Smarter Balanced Assessment (CAASPP) this week in their math classes. Please encourage our students to try their best on the assessment.
Saturday Academy (4/20) - Our next Saturday Academy is on April 20th. Academy hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. This is a great opportunity for students to receive support in their academics.
VUSD School Climate Survey - As a part of our commitment to creating more inclusive and equitable learning environments, all staff and students will be asked to participate in a short survey intended to gather valuable staff perception data on school climate across our District.
We will administer the survey next week in Homeroom.
Students and/or their parents may opt-out of participating in this survey by filling out the opt-out form.
Spring Dance Show (4/18-19) - Mark your calendars for the Spring Dance Show. The show will be on April 18th and April 19th at 7 p.m. at LJ Williams. Staff get in free with their ID cards. It will be a great show - do not miss out!
Hall of Fame (4/26) - Our Hall of Fame dinner and ceremony is on Friday, April 26th. Please view the flyer below for more information.
Drama Spring Dance (4/25-27) - Support our drama students and program by attending their Spring Showcase. The show runs from April 25 - 27. Please see the flyer below for more information.
Miner Expo Week (4/22-26) - Miner Expo week will consist of dress-up days, activities, and a rally. Check out the flyer to see the dress-up days. It is going to be a fun week!
Learning Director and Counselor Corner
COS Concurrent and DE – The Student Services Office has held several workshops during HR, after school, and in classrooms to help students through the process of enrolling concurrently at COS. We have processed about 200 forms for Summer and Fall programs. We will continue to support students through the next steps. COS concurrent and DE class registration opens on Monday, May 6th.
Fresno State Bulldog Bound Presentations – A Fresno State representative will be on campus Monday hosting presentations for our AVID students. Bulldog Bound is Fresno State’s guaranteed admission program for students who meet minimum CSU requirements. These students and their families are supported on their path to Fresno State throughout their years at EDHS. The presentation will cover the benefits of the program.
Senior Meeting – We are hosting our last senior meeting for the Class of 2024. This is an important meeting to discuss graduation, Grad Nite, Prom, Senior Week and Miner of the Year. Senior HR teachers please take attendance and walk your students to the gym for the meeting.
UC Merced – A UC Merced representative will meet with 31 currently admitted seniors on Tuesday to help them through the enrollment process.
Miner Meet Up - Last week we held our first Miner Meet Up with Principal Nelson. Miner Meet Up provides students with the opportunity to ask questions, share ideas, and offer suggestions to improve our student experience at El Diamante. Our student representatives from clubs and programs were invited to the Miner Meet Up. Our students did a tremendous job of offering suggestions, feedback, and input. The administration team will meet to discuss our students' suggestions and then we will meet-up again to share actions we will take from their input and feedback.
Thank you to our Climate and Culture team for organizing the event. We will continue to have Miner Meet-ups. Our student voice is valued and appreciated.
Shout-Outs
Shout-out to our staff and students for welcoming our WASC committee. Thank you to our students and staff for meeting with our WASC committee. Thank you to our parents who met with our WASC committee on Sunday. Great job to our Focus Group leads and WASC Chair, Tom Fox!
- Shout-out to our ASB for all the work they put into our Spring Rally. Our student leaders put a lot of effort into recognizing and celebrating our students and staff.
- Great job to our Concert Choir for earning the highest score out of all the choirs at the CMEA. Mr. Witt just received the scores from the competition this week.
- A round of applause for our orchestra who did an amazing job performing in front of our School Board.
