He Pānui-Wiki Waru, Whānga Tuatoru
Gladstone School Newsletter - Week 8, Term 3, 2021. 17/9/21.
Te Karere a te Tumuaki (Principal's Message)
Kia ora tātou katoa (Hi/greetings/hello everybody). Kei te pehea to wiki? (How has your week been?). It has been very rewarding seeing the high level of engagement from students and staff during 'Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori' (Māori Language Week). Our strategic challenge now is to keep the momentum going. Well done and thank you if you have been trying some new phrases at home or in your work place.
Keeping the holidays as they are will avoid adding stress and anxiety to children and their education and wellbeing. The Minister was also aware that an extended length of Term 4 for Auckland would add to fatigue among your students and staff at the end of a school year.
Thanks also to everyone for working hard to get pie orders from friends, family and work colleagues. This is a significant fundraiser for the school and we appreciate your efforts.
Ōnoke Syndicate (Year 7&8) is heading up to Rotorua on camp this coming Monday (meeting at 7:30am) and will be back on Friday the 24th at approximately 5pm. Graham Brown and I are going on the camp. Jaime Church will be in charge at school while we are away. Please direct any questions or concerns to Jaime - jaime@gladstone1.school.nz, and she will contact us as and when necessary. Absences and daily office queries can still go through Kirstan in the office.
Keep an eye out in the newsletter and on the app for upcoming event updates including scarecrow making and Pet Day.
Kia pai tō rā whakatā (have a great weekend),

Week 8 Manaakitanga Focus
Manaakitanga (pronounced: mah-nah-key-tongue-ah) - is essentially being a good host. Welcoming people into our spaces, taking care of others when they are in our spaces, showing care and compassion to those around us.
Manaakitanga Certificates
Congratulations to the following students who received certificates at this week's assembly: James Hanson; Kade Porter; David McKay; Joel Douglas; Thomas Herrick; Kyno Gleeson; Aiden Edwards; Guy Reynolds; Harper Neilson; Addison Aburn; Olivia Aburn. Ka pai tō mahi.
Whetu o te Wiki (Star of the Week)
Kā rawe (awesome) to our stars of the week - Māhinarangi Rutene; Lizzie Gibb; Annie Heffernan & Jack Macdougall. Wahine ma, you have been awesome buddies to our new students and have demonstrated amazing manaakitanga. Jack, you were our 'Night in Shining Armour' for getting Whaea Micaela's car started the other evening - thank you.
Scarecrow Fair Auction Items and Prizes
FoGS are now looking for auction items and prizes for the Scarecrow Fair to be held on Saturday 13th of November. We would love everyone to think about auction items and let us know if you would like to contribute. Some ideas that have sold really well in the past are:
- Holiday accommodation
- Experiences eg dinner vouchers, beauty spa vouchers, hotel accommodation
- Product eg meat packs, wine, sporting, clothing, firewood, home décor items, giftware
- Services eg plumbing, electrical, building, decorating, photography, cleaning, gardening
It may be that you can source items from other businesses that you have a relationship with. All donations are welcome – smaller items are great for prizes and cash donations help keep our net fair expenses low! Please contact Ang on 0292008196 with your suggestions/ideas.
It might be good to also pop a reminder in about scarecrow making at home…
Start Planning Your Scarecrows
“Superstitions” is the theme. The school scarecrows will be made on Friday 1 October at school but we’d also love lots of home entries in the Scarecrow Competition. This year every scarecrow entry will go in the draw to win a family prize and we will be awarding an overall supreme winner too! Great prizes to be revealed closer to the time. Anyone can enter and we will happily display scarecrows from outside the district in prime Gladstone locations.

FoGS Secretary Needed for 2022
Awesome news that Jo McKay has put her hand up to take over from Ang Falloon as Treasurer in 2022 - thanks Jo, you're a star. We are now looking for a Secretary to take over from Nadia who, like Ang, has worked tirelessly for years in this role. Please let Belinda (principal@gladstone1.school.nz) know if you are willing to give up a couple of hours a week to coordinate and take the minutes of the FoGS meetings and liaise with the Chairperson & Treasurer.
Strategic Planning Update
As you all know we have been working on developing our strategic plan over the past 2 years. We are now putting the final pieces of the puzzle together. Becks Tosswill has been working with us to develop visual images which reflect the strategic plan and story of our school. John Strang is working with us to develop a visual advert/pitch/movie to share with you all over the next few weeks. Thanks to John for coming in today to work with our Year 8's on this project.

Reminder: Pet Day - Thursday 21st October (if at alert level 1)
We have altered the organisation of this year's Pet Day. We have had quite a bit of feedback that the afternoon is too hot for the animals. In light of this we have decided to start Pet Day judging at 9:30 am on Thursday the 21st of October. Students will go to class at 9:00 am to do the role and then will come out to sort pets ready for judging. Categories and an order of events is being sent home on Monday.
There will be a bake sale for morning tea and (hopefully) a coffee cart. We will also run the usual sausage sizzle from 10:30 am onwards and anticipate that the event will finish around 12:30pm. Students are welcome to go home with parents/caregivers at this time or are equally as welcome to stay on at school until 3pm. Busses home will be running as usual on this day at 3pm.
Please note that sand trays will only be for those students who are not bringing a pet. They will be made at school starting at 9:30 am in the hall followed by judging at approx 11:00 am.
Reminder: Term Dates for 2022

We are also keen to sell indoor plants, given their current popularity - any cuttings gratefully received. Message Kat on 022 425 7760 if you need any potting mix or pots, or if you’d like some help with potting up.
