STEAM Day at Gahr High School
Cerritos High Student Wins ROTC Scholarship
When Fredy Ratunil came to school on Friday, February 23rd, he had no idea it would be a day that would change his life. Fredy, a senior at Cerritos High School, has been in the ROTC program and applied for the Navy ROTC Scholarship. At school, later that morning, in front of his peers and family, Major Mike Nolan from the United States Marine Corps officially gave him the news - he’s receiving a full-ride scholarship to the university of his choice. Fredy is one of only 16 graduating seniors receiving this scholarship in Southern California.
Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day
Middle school students from across ABCUSD gathered at Gahr High School to learn more about what their future may hold during Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day. Students heard from speakers who work in a STEM field and participated in hands-on learning, exposing them to a wide variety of possible career paths. Thanks to Gahr High School for hosting this event and to the Career Technical Education team for putting the event together.

Artesia Girls Soccer Team Wins!
The Artesia High School girls soccer team played for the CIF Southern Section Division 7 championship last Friday night against Maranatha High School. After going scoreless in regulation and one overtime, it came down to a penalty kick by Artesia in the second overtime. With families, fans, and community members watching, Briana Remigio’s kick hit the back of the net for the win. The Pioneers went on to win their first State playoff game on Tuesday. They will play their next game tonight.
Cerritos Dons Girls Basketball Team Take Runner Up
The Cerritos High School girls basketball team played Oak Park High School for the CIF Southern Section Division 3AA championship on Saturday. The Dons were making their second trip to the championship game over the last three years. After the buzzer rang, the Dons took home the runner-up trophy. Adding to the great news, the Dons won their first State playoff game and will move to the next round. Great job, Dons!
Cerritos Dons Boys Basketball Wins!
After winning the 605 League, the Cerritos High School boys basketball team played Yeshiva University of Los Angeles on Saturday night for the CIF Southern Section Division 4AA championship. After trailing by seven points in the first half, the Dons found their groove, winning by a score of 60-51. This is the Dons' first Division 4AA championship. Although they didn’t win their State playoff game, it was a successful season. Congratulations, Dons!
ABC Code Jam is Coming
ABC Code Jam is a student-organized “hackathon” hosted at Whitney High School. The fun event is open to programmers of all levels, offering twelve hours of intensive project development from inception to completion. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in enriching workshops and speaker sessions. This year's Code Jam is scheduled for March 16th, running from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Lunch and dinner will be provided. Registration is required by March 10th on a first-come, first-served basis. Secure your spot at: http://signup.codejam.fun.
Celebrating Black History Month with School Yard Rap
February is Black History Month, where we celebrate all the amazing contributions African Americans have made. Students from across the District learned more about Black history through visits by School Yard Rap. This group shares facts about Black history in a fun, engaging way.
Firefighters Visit Furgeson Elementary
Last Friday, students at Furgeson Elementary School learned about what their future could look like as they heard from professionals during Career Day. Students heard from a wide variety of working professionals, including a pediatric nurse, pharmacy technician, truck driver, mail carrier, dentist, law enforcement, and firefighters.
Congressman Robert Garcia Visits Artesia High School
Congressman Robert Garcia, who represents the 42nd congressional district, came to visit Artesia High School. During his visit, he spent time answering insightful questions from students and took a tour of the school. ABCUSD Board of Education Vice President Mr. Nishii was joined by Board members Mr. Brad Beach and Dr. Olga Rios to share their thoughts and views with the Congressman. Thank you to Congressman Garcia for your time and interest in ABCUSD schools.
Assemblymember Quirk-Silva Recognizes Gahr Teacher
Gahr High School band teacher Mr. Daren Loney was surprised by Mr. Joe Pak from Assemblymember Quirk-Silva’s office, Board of Education Vice President Mr. Ernie Nishii, band parents, and school administrators on Tuesday, February 27th, with a certificate recognizing his outstanding achievements as a teacher in the arts. Congratulations, Mr. Loney!

In 1965 the Artesia, Bloomfield, and Carmenita School Districts unified and became the ABC Unified School District. Today, the District serves over 20,000 Pre-K to 12th Grade and adult education students through its 30 campuses, adult school, and virtual academy. The District is home to some of the most awarded and recognized schools in California and serves the cities of Artesia, most of Cerritos, Hawaiian Gardens, as well as portions of Lakewood, Long Beach, and Norwalk.
