Women's History Month
Dorothea Lange
During her long, prolific, and groundbreaking career, the American photographer Dorothea Lange made some of the most iconic portraits of the 20th century. Dorothea Lange: Seeing People reframes Lange’s work through the lens of portraiture, highlighting her unique ability to discover and reveal the character and resilience of those she photographed. Featuring some 100 photographs, the exhibition addresses her innovative approaches to picturing people, emphasizing her work on social issues including economic disparity, migration, poverty, and racism.
Ruth Bader Ginsberg
Ruth Bader Ginsberg faced many challenges to become a lawyer. In 1956, she was one of only nine women at Harvard Law School (out of 500 students!). She and her female classmates were even banned from using one of the libraries on campus. But that didn’t stop her from following her dream—which led her to become the first Jewish person and second woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court—the highest court in the country.
Katherine Johnson
The stars were always within reach for Katherine Johnson. Using her mathematics skills, she helped NASA send astronauts to the moon and return them safely home. She also overcame racial and gender hurdles that helped make giant leaps for humankind.
BE SAFE, BE RESPONSIBLE, and BE RESPECTFUL
A Call for Drivers to Model Our Schoolwide Expectations in the Carline
Lately, we have noticed more tense and unsafe moments between drivers during drop off and pick up. Keeping our students and staff safe is extremely important, so it is crucial that everyone follows the car line rules. It has been shocking to see the extremely unsafe, disrespectful, and irresponsible behavior from drivers in our carline, especially knowing our students are watching. Let us all try to be more patient and ensure we are setting better examples for our students by showing respect and understanding where we lead with kindness and safety in the carline.
Read Across America Week
Manavon and the Early Learning Center celebrated Read Across America Week with spirit days and many activities. Manavon students showed their creativity with a Bookmark Design Competition. This year’s theme was “Celebrate Reading.” Winners were announced today and the winning bookmarks are copied and each student gets a bookmark with their grade level winner's design onto it. Teachers had access to a Digital Bookshelf and could choose a book to share during morning meeting or another time during the school day. We had two different StoryWalks set up for classes to take a walk and read a great book at the same time! Books were dismantled page-by-page and displayed throughout the building. Also, many classes invited guest or mystery readers come into to read in their classes.
Celebrating Leap Day
Miss Gould's third graders and Mrs. Grasso's kindergarteners worked together to learn about Leap Day! They read a book that taught them about leap years, wrote about what they wanted to do with their "extra day," and did some activities that had to do with leaping and the number four.
Learning about Their Community
Comparing Community Types
Second graders worked collaboratively to compare community types! They created and presented posters, spotlighting unique characteristics of urban, suburban, and rural communities. From skyscrapers to playgrounds to working farms, each poster was a labor of love and learning!
So Much Happening in STEM
Rosie the Riveter in STEM
Second graders read the story "Rosie Revere Engineer" and then designed and created their own "flying machines" that flew on zip lines!
Ozobots in Fourth Grade STEM
Fourth grade practiced their coding skills with Ozobots. They use special color combinations to programs the Ozobots to do specific movements.
Information from Previous Messages
PSSA Information for Third, Fourth and Fifth Graders
As spring begins so does preparation for the PSSA. All students in third, fourth, and fifth grade will be taking the English/Language Arts and Math portions of the assessment. Additionally, fourth graders will take the Science PSSA. The information obtained from the PSSA serves as a valuable tool for planning future school programs, student advanced placement, developing curriculum, in-service training, and informing the public about student achievement. Please see the linked letter below and the information posted on the district's website: PSSA - Phoenixville Area School District (pasd.com)

Student Medication Important Reminders
Any medication a student may need to take during the school day MUST be dropped off by an adult with doctor's orders and in packaging with your child's prescription information. Please DO NOT send in any medication with your child in his/her backpack or lunch box (This includes inhalers and EPI pens.)
Car Line Pick Up Reminders
Our car line is consistently going later than our staffing hours and we are hoping to move the line more efficiently. Please remember to stay in your car when picking your child up at the end of the day and arrive promptly.
Pick Up Patrol for Early Dismissal
Ensuring School and Student Safety
As the schools continue to make safety a priority, we are asking that when using Pick Up Patrol for an early dismissal the following information be typed into the "MORE INFO" box.
1) reason for the dismissal
2) if they are returning
3) name of the person picking up
This will allow us to keep the dismissal efficient while also ensuring the students' safety.

Breakfast on Half Days
On days that we have a two-hour delay, breakfast will not be served. Our cafeteria staff will be busy preparing lunches as students arrive, since we begin serving lunch within 10 minutes of students' arrival.
Important Arrival Procedures
- Arrive on time: doors will close at 8:55 am.
- If the doors are closed, you must escort your child into the building.
- Please do not stop in any driving areas to drop your child off.
- You MUST be in the car line or PARKED in a spot to let your child out of the car.
- If you were given a red placard stay in the left side of the car line. At the stop sign where double lane ends make a left into visitor spots. Do not come through parking lot and ask for barricades to be moved.
- Do not use visitor spots if you were not assigned one.
Reminder: Cell Phones and Smart Watches
Birthday/Holiday Treats
Due to the many students with allergies and food reactions food items to celebrate student birthdays are not permitted. We are requesting that all birthday recognitions be non-food based. We do want to acknowledge student birthdays but encourage families to do so in other ways. For example, small items such as pencils or stickers for classmates or the donation of a book to the school or classroom library in honor of a child’s birthday would be appropriate. Thank you for honoring and respecting this request.
Holiday celebrations will be held in compliance with School Board Policy #246 Student Wellness. The policy states “The district recognizes that classroom parties and celebrations are a tradition at school. School staff and parents/guardians are encouraged to include healthy food offerings, as defined in this policy, at school parties and events to support a healthy environment throughout the district.” Policy 246 can be viewed in its entirety by visiting the district’s website.
Holiday celebrations and end-of-year classroom celebrations will be announced in advance for parents to be prepared in determining food choices with their children. Birthday celebrations are held randomly and do not allow for parent awareness prior to the event in the school setting, which contributed to the decision for birthday recognitions to be non-food based.
