Our school health team is here to help! Erin Prevo, Health Associate at West Elementary, and Tina VandeKamp, Health Associate at Northstar Elementary, work with Angie Mitchell, School Nurse to provide more coverage at all the buildings. If you have any questions, concerns or information to pass along, please let them know.
Here are some friendly tips and reminders from the Nurse’s Office:
Help your student stay healthy by encouraging them to:
Wash hands frequently.
Cover coughs and sneezes.
Eat BREAKFAST...EVERY DAY!
Eat LUNCH...EVERY DAY!
Get an hour of physical activity/play every day.
Get 8-10 hours of sleep...every night.
Drink plenty of water.
Dress for the weather: layers, extra jacket, extra clothes are helpful.
Stay home if ill.
Illness and when to stay home from school:
Fever over 100 and not feeling well. May return when fever-free for 24 hours without fever reducing medications like Tylenol or Motrin.
Vomiting: may return when vomit free for 24 hours and able to tolerate a regular diet.
Diarrhea: may return when diarrhea free for 24 hours and able to tolerate a regular diet.
Starting antibiotics: students may generally return when they have been on antibiotics for 24 hours, are fever free (see above) and feeling well enough to attend school.
Facts about Head Lice:
Assume head lice is always a concern
“Take a Peek Once a Week”: Check your child regularly, especially if they have an itchy scalp.
If you find lice and/or nits, treat head lice with an over the counter head lice shampoo following the instructions exactly; comb-comb-comb; wash, shampoo and comb-comb-comb every night in between head lice shampoo treatments.
Wash bedding, coats, sweatshirts, and clothing. Vaccum.
Check all family members. Treat if necessary.
Did you know?
Head lice do not fly or jump? They move by crawling and are spread by direct head-to-head contact with someone who has head lice.
Spread by clothing, such as hats and personal care items like combs, is uncommon?
Personal hygiene and cleanliness have nothing to do with who can or cannot get lice?
The school nurse will be happy to check your child? Just call and ask: 641-891-6016.
Marion County Public Health offers a variety of services from immunizations to WIC to I-Smiles dental care to help with transportation. Call 641-828-2238 to find out more.
Health Regards!
Angie Mitchell, RN, BSN, School Nurse

The story of “The Elevator” was very exciting to the students in Mrs. Hansen’s 8th grade Language Arts class. The story was open ended, and the students had to make a google slide to write an ending to the story. The students had a lot of fun working on this project, for they all had different ideas of what the ending of the story world be and want the elevator looks like with the characters on it.
