Parent Transition Meeting
Parents of current South Elementary 4th graders are invited to attend a Parent Transition Meeting on the evening of Monday, May 20, from 6:00 to 7:00 PM. Parents will take part in a similar orientation to what students will experience. Our goal is to ease any anxiety on the part of both students and parents.
Raising Awareness of Alopecia and Olivia's Cause
Alopecia areata is a common autoimmune skin disease, causing hair loss on the scalp, face and sometimes on other areas of the body. In fact, it affects as many as 6.8 million people in the U.S. with a lifetime risk of 2.1%. People of all ages, both sexes, and all ethnic groups can develop alopecia areata. It often first appears during childhood and can be different for everyone who has it.
Danville Community Schools has current students who have developed alopecia and will continue to have students who develop alopecia into the future. Our aim is to provide education and information to students and community members alike. For this reason, DCMS will host a motivational speaker who also has Alopecia, Olivia Rusk, on Friday, April 19th. All students 5 - 8 will have an opportunity to learn her story.
As well, there is a movie called Wig'd Out based on her story that will be played on 4/18/19, 7 PM at the Royal Theatre in Danville. Wig'd Out the Movie is the only feature-length, scripted movie about a teenage girl with alopecia. Wig'd Out was inspired by the real life of Olivia Rusk and her total hair loss due to the medical condition alopecia. See the movie trailer below.
WIG'D OUT HAS WON SEVERAL AWARDS:
Best Actress Award at the Alhambra Theater Film Festival
Audience Choice Award at the Alhambra Theater Film Festival
Best Actress at the May Day Film Festival
In August of 2016, Olivia's Cause launched a program to bring Wig'd Out the Movie to students in schools throughout the United States. We are pleased to have this program at DCMS.
