Youth Mentoring Initiative
YMI - Youth Mentoring Initiative has been serving the Fishers community, in partnership with HSE schools, since 2008. YMI partners with our schools to come alongside counselors, teachers, and parents by providing another caring adult to support and encourage the success of each student. YMI is a FREE program, as we are a non-profit organization and exist due to donations, grants, and the support of our community.
Our Mentors are adult volunteers that come to mentor once a week, for one hour, during the school day. Mentors meet one-on-one with students and provide them with a caring and consistent presence in their lives; become a reliable friend; a role model; and simply someone they can count on.
Do you have or know a student that could benefit from having a Mentor? Follow these steps to get them enrolled in the program:

This month the school counselors completed the second round of classroom guidance lessons! Below is a description of skills and activities included for each grade level.
5th Grade Lesson:
5th graders had a lot of fun with Mr. Kozloski’s 2nd classroom guidance visit of the year. They started with a review of their personal growth goals that they came up with during the 1st classroom guidance visit, as well as adding additional goals for the remainder of the school year. 5th graders also explored the topics of postsecondary education choices and career readiness with the help of their Indiana Learn More magazine. Hopefully they brought the magazine home to continue this discussion with parents. Finally they closed the lesson out with an online learning styles assessment. Students were able to identify and discuss their own personal learning style.
If you would like for your child to participate in Mr. Kozloski's 5th grade small group counseling during student learn time, please complete the permission and turn it in by January 18th, 2019. To access the permission slip, please click here.
6th Grade Lesson:
In our second classroom guidance lesson, the goals and standards focused on were conflict resolution, demonstrating empathy, and ethical decision making/social responsibility. Students were introduced to the idea of the Drama Triangle, which explains different roles we take in conflict situations. We applied this idea to a real world scenario and discussed how we can be problem solvers when we have conflict with others. We closed the lesson by discussing that sometimes conflict goes too far for a 6th grader to handle on their own. In groups, students completed a sorting activity where they identified conflict scenarios in the following categories: I've Got This, I Need an Adult, and This is an Emergency Situation. Our teams did a great job discussing and applying these conflict resolution concepts!
If you would like for your child to participate in Mrs. Sullivan's 6th grade small group counseling during student learn time, please complete the permission and turn it in by January 18th, 2019. To access the permission slip, please click here.
Thank you PTO!
Notes From The Nurse
Now that colder weather is upon us, please be sure to send your child with a coat, hat, gloves, etc. The clinic does not have any of these items on hand.
The clinic is in need of gently used boys and girls pants that have elastic waist. Leggings, sweatpants, joggers, etc. that your child has outgrown can be loaned to other students if they fall and get wet at recess. Break is a great time to purge your child's closet of these items!
Homework Club
- Who: Any student needing assistance with specific concepts/completing homework
- What: Students do not need to sign up ahead of time to attend. However, they will need a note from a parent to stay after school. Students MUST have homework or need assistance as this truly is work time, not a social hour. All school rules apply.
- When: Tuesday-Thursday – after school from 2:55-3:30pm (Please note that we will no longer have homework club on Mondays or Fridays)
- Where: FCI Media Center
- Why: We recognize that we are all a team with a heart to assist our students. FCI desires to connect with students and assist them with academic needs in an environment outside the school day as the need presents itself.
NOTE: This club is not intended to be a YMCA after school child care club. However, if your child does attend the YMCA after school child care, he/she may attend homework club then go directly to the YMCA area in the cafeteria. If you have any questions or concerns, you may contact FCI @ 915-4220.
Homework Hotline
The Rose-Hulman Institue is here to help you with your math and science questions. Rose-Hulman’s Homework Hotline is a free service with student-tutors available Sundays – Thursdays, 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm (ET). You can call a tutor at 877-Ask-Rose (877-275-7673) or chat with a tutor at AskRose.org. You can also email tutors by visiting AskRose.org, at any time and they will respond during operating hours.
Now is the time for a strong start to the school year, and we are ready to help.

***IMPORTANT FCI PROCEDURES***
Attendance Procedures
Please follow the below process when your child has will be absent, has a transportation change or an early dismissal. Following this process ensures that the office and teachers are informed of the change(s).
Transportation Change / Early Dismissal Notification Process
Follow one of the below steps to notify the school of your child’s change.
Send a note with your child in the morning
Send an email to the office staff and your child’s teacher
- It’s important to include all of the following contacts should you send an email
- Michele Pitts – mpitts@hse.k12.in.us
- Ebony Roberts - eroberts@hse.k12.in.us
- Julie Green – jgreen@hse.k12.in.us
- Susan Peterson – sdpeterson@k12.in.us
- Student’s teacher
Last minute changes during the school day:
- Call the office at 317-915-4220
After school hours:
Call the attendance line at 317-915-4228. Please include the following in your note and/or message:
- child's full name
- homeroom teacher
- time of early dismissal
- nature of dismissal (e.g., doctor appointment, physical therapy, etc.)
- reason for the absence (be specific)
- your full name
- contact telephone # in the event of questions
If an absence is due to a doctor's appointment, remember to send the doctor's excuse note to school for attendance purposes. Medical absences are recorded differently according to our state/district attendance policies.
Do not communicate absence/early dismissal/transportation changes solely to the teacher. This information must go through the office. While you may also notify the teacher, if the teacher is not present at school and information is sent to him/her, the office will not be knowledgeable of the information.
IMPORTANT SAFETY ITEM REMINDERS
- Buzzer protocol - When you ring the buzzer for entry, remember that the office staff will ask you your name, intent, child's name/homeroom to ensure those that enter FCI should enter.
- Photo ID - Whether picking up or dropping off, please have photo ID such as your driver's license ready for identification purposes.
- Door 1 entry - All visitors must enter via door 1 regardless of time of day. Please do not come in the cafeteria door with students before school.
- Bus lot - Do not enter the bus lot prior to bus arrival or while buses are in the lot.
- Drop-off - Please make all attempts possible to have your child exit your vehicle on the side of the curb. Exit the opposite side and walking in between cars is not safe.
Activity dismissal
For school-wide events such as the Hang Out, Falcon Fest, all-school stay-after basketball games, the following pick-up procedures assist in safer, quicker dismissal:
- 5th grade parents to travel north on Olio Road into the front parking lot then south on Olio Road out of the parking lot. Pick-up is in FRONT of the building for 5th grade.
- 6th grade parents to travel south on Olio Road into the bus parking lot then north on Olio Road out of the parking lot. Pick-up is in the bus lot for 6th grade. This is north of the school on the side face HSE High School.
ABOVE ALL, we know your schedules are very busy as well. However, we ask that you NOT park in the parking lot and ask your child to walk across the lot. This is not safe as there are many vehicles in the lot. Please assist us in keep all of our children safe and remain in the pick up line. We will take all possible efforts to move the line quickly and safely. Thank you in advance!! :)
Safe Visitor Badges
Per HSE Policy, visitors must have their Safe Visitor Badge scanned to check-in to the building. Please download the SafeVisitor App (available for iPhones and in Google Play for all other phones) or have your badge available when you come into the school. Looking up names can lead to the wrong person being signed in.
Upon leaving, please give your printed badge to the office staff for quick check-out.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Vicki Foutty at 317-594-4100.
Text-A-Tip
Text-A-Tip is a program that allows students, parents or others to anonymously send a text or email message to our school resource officers and school administrators about concerns they may have for their own safety or the safety of others. Text-A-Tip will be actively monitored during the school day. It should not be used for emergencies—Call 911 if you need immediate help. For more information on how to submit a tip please use the link below.

All students in HSE Schools deserve to come to school free of fear and to feel safe to be their authentic selves. Discrimination of any type is strictly prohibited and will not be tolerated at HSEHS Schools – this includes sexual harassment (Title IX) and discrimination based on disabilities or race (Titles II and VI).
If students ever experience any type of harassment, we ask that they report this immediately to an administrator, school counselor or trusted adult.
