Brown School Buzz
December 5, 2023
Dear Families,
February is flying by! As we began our month, we kicked off our Kids Heart Challenge, celebrated our 100th Day of School, experienced two wonderful visits from educators, and we continued to celebrate Black History Month! It's hard to believe we are on the threshold of our February vacation and that we are already gearing up for Music in our School Month in March!

Parenting through the school year, including vacation weeks can be both wonderful and challenging. It's definitely a roller coaster...it can be fun, scary, exhilarating, and goes way faster than we ever thought possible! Enjoy the ride everyone!

Spot the Robotic Dog
Boston Dynamics provided a free assembly for us last week. The educator helped students understand how coding is used to program robots and games. She also demonstrated how robots are used to help people interact with their environment and how students can learn to code. Spot was a big hit!
Sheryl Faye Captivates!
Thank you PTO and Magic Hat!
Performer Sheryl Faye shared the story of Laura Ingalls Wider with second and third graders on February 1 and the students were enthralled! Thank you PTO for sponsoring this program-and Magic Hat for providing funding for our Enrichment experiences!

Massachusetts Report Card for the Brown School Now Available
Every year, each public school and school district in Massachusetts receives a report card. Just as your child’s report card shows how they are doing in different subjects, the school’s report card is designed to show families how our school is doing in different areas.
The Brown School celebrates with LOBBY LIVE!
March is Music in our Schools Month and schools across our nation will celebrating in a variety of ways. We are very excited to be taking part in the celebration at the Brown School again this year!
In addition to our Grade 1-3 Winter Concert, a very engaging enrichment for our third graders with musician David Coffin, we will also be having LIVE MUSIC in our lobby every morning in March during arrival time. Our aim is to have our students experience a wide variety instruments, vocals, and genres of music. We were thrilled to have so many volunteers last year and our students experienced everything from the cello and choral groups to the electric guitar and accordion!
Last year, we also had a few students who had been studying music outside of school share their talent as well. Tuesdays and Thursdays will be designated as student performance days this year. Student performers should be prepared to share 3 selections, and should be comfortable performing in front of an audience. The 15-20 minute time period is far too long for one elementary student to perform, so there are 3 slots for each of the student dates. If your child has been taking music lessons and/or participating in a music group outside of school and would like to share on one of our student days, PLEASE SIGN UP HERE.
Some of our Daily Black History Ponderings
As we to understand and learn more about the contributions of Black Americans throughout our history, students have been invited to discuss some provocative quotes from just a few of our more famous leaders. Here are just a few:
"Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world."
Harriet Tubman, American abolitionist
"Never underestimate the power of dreams and the influence of the human spirit. We are all the same in this notion: The potential for greatness lives within each of us."
Wilma Rudolph, Olympic track and field athlete
"Won't it be wonderful when Black history and Native American history and Jewish history and all of U.S. history is taught from one book. Just U.S. history."
Maya Angelou, writer and civil rights activist
"The time is always right to do what is right."
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
"Obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it."
Michael Jordan-Former professional basketball player
