NBJH Weekly Update 4/12/24
April 12, 2024
Principal's Message
Hi folks,
We did it! Aside from some make-up testing for absent students, we have completed IAR testing for the 23-24 school year. I am confident our staff and students are ready to get back to their normal routines and a predictable bell schedule after four consecutive days of testing.
Looking at the week ahead, we have several special events for both students and our parents/guardians. Our extracurricular bands perform a concert Monday evening; a small group of 8th grade students have been selected to participate in the Village of Northbrook Student Government Day on Wednesday; 8th grade graduation picture retakes will occur on Thursday (no need to RSVP); we will host an orientation night for current 5th graders and their parents Thursday evening; and Mr. Kyrouac and the NBJH jazz members will perform at Madame Zuzu's in Highland Park Friday evening. Another busy yet fun week!
I also wanted to encourage our families to participate in the annual HOH 5K Run/Walk held on Saturday, May 4th. (More information can be found near the bottom of this newsletter.) The proceeds from this District 28 event go to the HOH Scholarship Fund, awarding scholarships to graduating high school seniors who attended NBJH. Whether you want to run, walk or just cheer on a friend, the HOH 5K is such a positive event for the D28 community. And of course, it supports a great cause! Families can register at www.HOH5K.org.
Finally, Eid al-Fitr marked the end of Ramadan this week. We wish peace to all in the new year.
Enjoy the weekend...and the weather!
Scott

NBJH Talent Show Returns!
We are excited to bring back the annual Talent Show this spring. This year's show will be a morning assembly on Friday, May 17. But we won't have a show without student acts! In previous years we've had students sing, play music, dance, demonstrate martial arts, do gymnastics and even perform magic tricks. Interested students will use a link provided to them to sign up for auditions during lunch periods, April 15-19. Questions can be directed to your child's electives teacher. We have also created a Google Classroom for 'Talent Show 2024' that contains all pertinent information.
Waukegan Road/Voltz Road Bridge Rehab *repeat*
Expect delays on Waukegan Road just south of Northbrook Junior High as bridge repair work begins April 15. The Illinois Department of Transportation will be performing structure rehabilitation of the bridge on Waukegan Road over the Union Pacific Railroad south of Voltz Road. Work will be performed in two stages with traffic reduced to one lane in both northbound and southbound directions in both stages. Work is expected to begin on April 15, 2024 and the anticipated completion date is September, 2024.
2024-2025 Student Registration Begins April 15
Online student registration for the 2024-25 school year will open on April 15. Parents will receive an email at 8 a.m. on April 15 with a unique registration code and link to the online system.
Parents need to verify all student demographic, emergency, and medical information for each child as part of the process. The option for bus transportation is included in registration. The registration process is complete when student fees are paid.
Summer Programming Registration Closes Sunday
Registration for the Summer Enrichment Programs closes at midnight Sunday. Parents can enroll children in 1,2, 3 or 4 classes as long as the classes are contiguous. There are lots of great activities to choose from. Classes for incoming grades 1-4 are held at Westmoor and incoming grades 5-8 at Northbrook Junior High. Choose from sports, arts, reading, travel, music, theater, science, games, and crafts. New this year, the sports offerings for grades 5-6 will be separate from grades 7-8.

We Need Feedback On Draft Strategic Plan
The Northbrook School District Strategic Planning Team is working to build a strategic plan that represents the interests of all students, families, staff, and community members and your help is needed to finalize the plan.
The team developed a draft of a new strategic plan and we need you and as many other stakeholders as possible to provide feedback about it through this survey by 4 p.m. on Friday, April 19.
Next Steps: The team will review your feedback and make final adjustments to the plan at their final meeting on Tuesday, April 30. Once the team finalizes the plan it will be presented to the School Board on May 28th for approval
