Counselor's Couch...
I have really enjoyed getting to meet the students during lunches and during passing periods. The students are beginning to settle into their schedules and are focusing on their academic successes, learning their teacher's expectations, well as making new friends and enjoying old friends. I have included a link to an article titled: 6 Tips to Raising Good Kids. Hopefully this will reassure you that you are on the right track! Enjoy your long Labor Day Weekend!

Bleacher Report...
Cross Country:
Last Saturday our Cross Country team traveled to Lockhart to compete in our first meet of the season. The Lockhart Invitational is one of the largest meets of the season with over 1600 runners in attendance from 6A to 1A varsity, JV and middle school divisions.
The 7th and 8th grade girls competed with over 120 other runners and over 10 teams. Overall our girls placed an impressive 2nd place as a team! Emma Eagle and Esther Long placed in the top 20 earning their first medals of the season.
The 7th and 8th grade boys also competed against over 120 runners and 10 teams. Our boys came away with an incredible 2nd place showing as a team. Noah Hernandez, Lucas Lawless, and David Rague ran strong to place in the top 20.
Our teams consisted of the following athletes:
7th and 8th Girls:
Schuyler Burke, TC Cagle, Katelyn Coldicott, Leah Coldicott, Hailee Cosgrove, Emma Eagle, Esther Long, Cassie McKinney, Emily Pieklik, Heather Power, Skylar Stefka, Addy Womack, Lorelee Felix, Phoebe Gale, Kat Leza, Sarah Long, Morgan Moreland, Emily Moxley, Avery Rague, Delaney Reighley, Cadence Sansom, and Emma Vincent
7th and 8th grade Boys:
Noah Hernandez, Rhett Kahlden, Lucas Lawless, Aiden Panter, David Rague, Reece Whitelaw, Brennen Baker, Jackson Carlton, Mikey D’Ambrose, Dalton Ditto, Tommy Nowlin, Jeremiah Phillips, Michael Thailing
Volleyball:
Lady Vikings Middle School Volleyball started their team practices this week and had their season opener vs. Johnson City at home on Thursday. The 7th grade A team had an awesome game! They played well but came up short of the win, losing in 3 matches.
The 8th grade Blue team fought hard and ended up clinching the win in 2 sets! The 8th grade Gold team overcame a tough loss in the 1st set to win the 2nd set and force a best 2 out of 3 scenario. We thought we had won the 3rd set when we got to 15 pts, but a miscommunication from the refs to the coaches forced the set to go to 25 points and we fell short at the end to lose the game 2-1.
We will be building on the win and using the losses to fuel our motivation and desire to solidify our fundamentals. We will rise to the challenge like true Lady Vikings and claim the 'W' next week for each team! Thank you for all the support, the gym was deafeningly loud! See you next week!
Making Connections in Ms. Reighley's class...
Mrs. Reighley’s 6 th Grade Viking Valor class has been learning about global issues and discussing how each one of us can make a difference in the world. The class recently read an article about the flooding in Louisiana and watched a newscast about the severity of the flood. It is so easy to feel desensitized and detached from natural disasters that don’t directly affect us. To help to make the Louisiana flood have a little more meaning for the students, Mrs. Reighley set up a Skype session between the class and the Austin Disaster Relief Network (ADRN) volunteers, who were in Louisiana. Mrs. Reighley’s husband, Chris
Reighley was overseeing the disaster relief efforts for ADRN and the students participated in a Skype session on Wednesday with Mr. Reighley. He took the students on a virtual tour through the city of Denham Springs, Louisiana, where 97% of the town was completely destroyed by the flood. The students wrote in their journals about the Skype experience and how it greatly changed their perspective and made the Louisiana flood feel so much more real to them. The class genuinely expressed their empathy for the Louisiana flood victims through their writing as well as several girls coming forward to ask if they could bring a basket into the classroom and collect toys and clothes to give to ADRN to help the flood victims.
