Principal Perspective - State Testing
As we enter April, we also enter the season of state testing. Each year our third and fourth graders test in ELA (English Language Arts) and Math. Our fifth graders test in ELA, Math and Science. The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) test is used for the ELA and Math tests. This is an adaptive test that students take on a Chromebook. There is no time limit to the test, and students will take it over several sessions in the classroom with their teacher. The Oregon Statewide Assessment System (OSAS) test is used for Science in fifth grade only.
This week during Collaboration time, we spent time as a staff looking at resources and supports for ensuring our students are able to do their best on each test. Teachers are incorporating questions similar to those on the SBAC into their lessons, reminding students of the parameters of the tests, and ensuring that they know how to use the online tools and access the test itself.
As parents, we ask that you are aware of when your child is testing (see notes from the teacher), and prepare them with lots of rest, healthy food, water, and a positive attitude. Also, please know that being absent during testing can really put stress on a student, as they then miss more class to make the test up.

5th Grade Student Surveys
For the next three years all 5th and 8th grade students will be surveyed in an online nutrition and PE survey in order gather information for planning, program evaluation, and assessment of progress on the District’s Physical Education and nutrition plan. The student survey window is: April 24 - May 31st.
The District is surveying 5th and 8th grade students to gather information for planning, program evaluation, and assessment of progress on the District’s Physical Education and nutrition plan.
The student survey takes about 20 minutes during the regular school day. Like other surveys, results will be presented only about groups. No individual data will be reported.
Your child may skip questions or stop filling out the survey at any time. Refusing to participate or withdrawing from the survey does not affect your child's grades or class standing in any way. If you or your child does not want to participate, your child can read or do some other activity while his or her classmates complete the survey.
A copy of the survey is available from your child's school and is posted at
