Principal's Message
The Haynes community experienced the loss of an icon right before we left for February break.
CHET DELANI passed away on February 14 at age 82. Mr. Delani served as principal of Haynes School for 30 years—more than half of Haynes School's entire existence and a tenure nearly unheard of in modern times. When he retired in 2000, he continued working, writing, developing curriculum, coaching and mentoring teachers and educational leaders, including right here at Haynes.
Mr. Delani knew that learning could be fun and that students could rise to meet high standards if you believed in them. He knew that when learning was fun, it was also engaging. He saw the absolute necessity of high standards for teaching and learning, and didn't accept anything less.
His impact on Haynes and the wider education profession has and will be felt for generations. Each day students eat lunch in our cafeteria named in Mr. Delani's honor, beneath a painting illustrating him doing what he loved, working with students, teaching and telling stories, and teaching through telling stories.
Mr. Delani's story will live on through his family and friends, his many passions, and for us, through his legacy right here at Haynes School.
Sincerely,
Jeff LaBroad
Principal
COVID Mitigation Changes Beginning Monday, March 7
Sudbury will adjust its COVID mitigation strategies beginning Monday, March 7. As we have, we will continue to monitor transmission and positivity rates and respond accordingly as needed.
MASKING—Masks will be optional for students, staff and visitors in our buildings and on buses beginning Monday. Masks will be required in the Health Office and in certain circumstances for individuals who recently tested positive for COVID. This week teachers are previewing this shift, with a special focus on respecting the choices of students, families and staff members who opt to continue wearing a mask.
LUNCH AND SNACK—In the weeks ahead we will continue to monitor our positivity rates and the needs of our students and staff who do and do not choose to wear masks. Our aim is to return to in-class snack and a social lunch model soon.
TESTING CONTINUES—Our testing mitigation continues through weekly PCR pool testing and at-home testing. Click here to sign up to participate in at-home testing if you haven't already.

Welcome Lauren Russo!
LAUREN RUSSO will join the Haynes team as special education teacher in the Steps program beginning Monday, March 7. Ms. Russo joins us from Prospect Hill Academy Charter School, where she currently serves as a Special Education Teacher. Ms. Russo is a graduate of Simmons University, from which she holds an undergraduate degree in English and a graduate degree in special education. She holds a license in moderate disabilities from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Interestingly, years back Ms. Russo completed one of her field placements at Haynes School.
Haynes creates common expected behaviors
Recently Haynes students were introduced to new expected behaviors. These behaviors add color and meaning to our four school rules, while also providing predictable expectations for how we demonstrate our rules in our community. Students worked with classroom teachers to recommend the expectations that could apply "everywhere." The final list (below) represents students' thinking across each classroom. Clear expectations for students allow them to best be able to contribute to the life of the school in positive ways.
