Last call for Multicultural Fair submissions!
We have an amazing group of students here & we want to enrich our community by getting to know the diversity of cultures and traditions that we have among us! So let's celebrate this diversity by participating in the third annual HOA Multicultural Fair!
Students can choose from a variety of options listed below, share them with their teacher or Mrs. Maher, and then we'll post them for all of the HOA community to see. We'd love a variety of submissions and cultures represented.
Here is a template for the google slide you will use. Remember, submissions are due today - April 5th.
Some ideas of types of submissions:
Share a recipe of your favorite traditional food/meal/dish
Be a cooking show host and show us how to prepare this dish!
Take pictures in traditional clothing from your culture
Be a travel host and make a video of yourself in these clothes and talk about them or take us to your family's country of origin and show us around.
Create a poster with pictures to showcase your culture
Draw a picture of what kids do for fun in your culture
Play music from your culture
Show us a dance from your culture
Teach us some of a language you speak other than English
Write, tell, or read a story that is significant to your family and/or culture
Share a holiday tradition that is unique to your family and/or culture
Students can be creative and come up with their own ideas as well, keeping the virtual presentation format in mind.
Shannon Freudenthal Named HOA Assistant Principal
Superintendent Scott announced that Shannon Freudenthal will be the new assistant principal of Hillsboro Online Academy, effective July 1. She will succeed current principal, Linda Harrington, who is retiring at the end of the school year.
Ms. Freudenthal began as a 3rd and 4th grade teacher at McKinney Elementary School in 2014. She continued teaching there through the 2018-19 school year, with a nearly two-month break early in 2019 to serve as a temporary principal of Farmington View Elementary School. She then transitioned to Orenco Elementary School as its dean of students before taking on the same position at Hillsboro Online Academy the following year. A few months into her role at HOA, she was named the elementary assistant principal. In the 2021-22 school year, Freudenthal accepted the job of vice principal for Portland Public Schools’ K-12 Online Learning Academy.
In both of her administrative roles with online schools, Freudenthal modeled and trained teachers on effective instructional practices and classroom management strategies. She also supervised and evaluated staff, and communicated regularly with students and families to build relationships.
“[Freudenthal] has a history of being flexible, calm, and collaborative in her approach to leadership; is committed to data-driven instruction; and is passionate about providing students with opportunities to realize their potential and achieve their academic goals,” notes Scott. “I am confident that her background, experience with online education, and instructional leadership skills have positioned her well for success in this role.”
