State Releases February Money Due to Charleroi School District
We received notification from PDE that on Monday, April 4th we are scheduled to receive $1,144,829.00 for February from the the Basic Education Subsidy
Just a reminder of what we were promised from the state in last years 15-16 budget
Basic Education Funding (BEF)
"2015-16 Proposed BEF" $8,030,971
"Dollar Increase" $375,755
"Percent Increase" 4.91%
State Budget
Even though Gov. Wolf neither signed nor vetoed the spending bill last week, thus allowing it to become law, he did veto an accompanying fiscal code bill that outlined how those dollars would be distributed, among a host of other things.
As a result, while districts will start getting BEF payments in the next few weeks, it remains unclear whether they will get any of the $150M increase included in the spending bill.
Additionally, PlanCon, the pension crisis, the state’s fiscal crisis and a host of other issues remain unresolved as talks must soon begin on a 2016-17 budget plan.
In a real sense, although there will be some money going out to districts soon, the real budget impasse is far from over.
The governor’s Veto of fiscal code bill continues hold on PlanCon reimbursements
Legislature in recess until April 4, with budget issues continuing as top priority
49th Legislative District Public Forum Meeting at Charleroi SD
Charleroi SHASDA Student Representative - Garrett Behanna
SHASDA - Next Thursday
The annual Student Forum will be held on Thursday, April 7, 2016 beginning at 5:00 pm at Upper St. Clair High School. Our student representative this year will be Garrett Behanna
Student Questions have been approved.
We will open the meeting to all Board members.
The agenda will be sent next week.
I need a count of which board members would like to attend by March 24, 2016.
The STUDENT FORUM QUESTIONS are:
1) How are your teachers currently utilizing technology in the classroom? If you could share with one of your teachers a device, program, or new way of thinking when it comes to technology what would it be and why?
2) If you were an administrator (Principal, Superintendent, Curriculum Coordinator) for a day what would you change in your school and/or district?
3) What are your impressions of standardized tests such as the PSSA and Keystone exams? If you do not feel as though they are beneficial describe one way that students could demonstrate that they are proficient in Math, English Language Arts, and Science (Biology)?
4) STEAM education stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. Do you see yourself entering a field that incorporates one or more of these courses? If so, please explain which field and how these courses may impact your daily work?
5) Hind sight is always 20-20, meaning that when you look back on something that occurred in the past, you would have made a better decision. If you were able to share your knowledge of what you learned in high school with an incoming high school student to improve their high school experience, what advice would you share and why?

Derrick Andress and Mercedes Wisyanski are two senior class student members at Charleroi High School who will be recognized by SHASDA (South Hills Area School Districts Association) on Saturday, April 30th at the Hilton Garden Inn at Southpointe, Canonsburg, PA as our District winners of this year’s SHASDA award.
This award is designed to identify students who have demonstrated significant improvement and/or overcome obstacles in attaining their current status; it is designed to recognize growth and improvement.
The nominees are selected by a team that includes administrators and faculty members who identify students who meet the above criteria. A variety of factors are considered as the final two are determined.
Derrick’s career interests are in the auto body industry. Mercedes is interested in pursuing a career in Criminal Justice.
They both were overwhelmingly selected by our staff and are worthy of the recognition of the award.
Congratulations Derrick and Mercedes!
