Perkins School News - May 2019
Monthly News for Parents
Principals Message
We are nearing the end of the school year, but we are not winding down by any means. We cannot emphasize enough the importance of our students remaining focused, attending school daily and arriving on time. We need the help and support of our parents to keep learning a priority.
The month of May brings staff appreciation week, nurse appreciation day, and as always, an abundance of learning.
Together we can ensure an enjoyable remainder of the school year.
Thanks for all you do - have a great month!

PLAYGROUND SAFETY!!
Parents should set clear safety rules for children and always supervise your children while they are using the playground equipment.
We need to have clear ground rules for the playground for our children. Some basic rules to follow are:
*Sit down on the swings, and slow down before getting off. Do not stand or jump off the swings.
*Use both hands when climbing.
*Avoid climbing on wet equipment, using wet equipment could lead to falls.
*Never climb up the front of slides. They could get injured by another child coming down the slide. Children could slip and fall when climbing up the slide.
*Avoid walking in front of swings. Another child on the swing would have difficulty stopping to avoid hitting them.
*Avoid broken equipment. Tell an adult about the broken equipment, and never use equipment that is broken.
*Avoid pushing or shoving. Encourage turn taking, children should not crowd or push others to get onto the equipment.
We can prevent injuries and ensure every child enjoys their time outside!

Mrs. Christine VanDemortel: Second Grade Special Education Teacher in a Co-Taught Classroom
Mrs. VanDemortel knew from a young age that she wanted to one day become a teacher. She remembers her teachers from kindergarten, fourth grade, seventh grade and freshman years having a big impact on her love for teaching. For the past twenty-four years she has lived that dream. Mrs. VanDemortel attended Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania where she received a duel undergraduate major in elementary and special education. While in college, she volunteered at the on-campus school for children with disabilities. In the summer of her senior year of college, Mrs. VanDemortel worked at a camp for children and adults with varying disabilities. From that experience, Mrs. VanDemortel knew she had pursued the right career and began a lifelong passion for those on the autistic spectrum. Mrs. VanDemortel’s teaching career began at Roosevelt Children’s Center in Newark, followed by working in St. Petersburg, FL and Rush Henrietta before ending up back in Newark and finally at Perkins School. She loves working with second graders and her co-teacher Mrs. Meek. They joke and call themselves VEEK. Mrs. VanDemortel is known around the school to sing and dance in order to help her students learn, especially during math. She participates in school committees such as Tier 1, Safety, Fall Festival, playground, and is the building representative for new teacher training.
On the side, Mrs. VanDemortel enjoys spending time with her family and friends. She enjoys crocheting, baking and decorating cookies, (just ask her students) as well as shopping and watching her son play soccer for Alfred State. She resides in Williamson, NY with her husband Michael, a Newark grad, and 19-year-old twins, Ryan and Emilee. Ryan is pursuing a career in electrical maintenance and Emilee will be a future nurse. Her family brings her so much joy, love, and pride. Family is everything.

Mrs. Crowder- Secretary, TA, TAB Room
Mrs. Crowder grew up right here in Newark and graduated from Newark High School. She always knew at a very young age that she wanted to be a mom. She had aspirations to be a Police Officer but that quickly changed when her son Derek was born in 1995. As Derek grew older, she worked a few retail jobs until her daughter Ella was born in 2002. She decided to stay home with her, and ultimately decided to start caring for children in her home. She loved this and really enjoyed being with the kids. She did this for well over 10 years and many of the children she cared for were children of teachers from Perkins School. Those close relationships helped pave the way for Mrs. Crowder to be such a wonderful part of Perkins School.
In 2014 after going through a divorce she decided to apply for a TA position. In her first year, she worked with Mrs. Robinson in her PreK classroom. Since that first year, she has worked with the likes of Amanda Quku, Kelly Faust, Jessica Herendeen, Shannon Breen and others. She has also held the position of Secretary. She loves everything she does at Perkins School and many around the school say she "wears many hats." This year she has been a part of the TAB room which has been a very rewarding experience. She loves children, being a part of the wonderful Perkins School and truly cherishing the opportunity to be an impact part of so many young lives.
