WMHS's After School Program at the Rec
Is your child going to the Rec Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday afternoons?
If yes, awesome! Or if you would like them to so they have an opportunity to participate in structured activities, then they MUST be registered in Arbiter in the WMHS After School Program to be at the Wiscasset Community Center, especially from 1:00-3:00 on Wednesdays. Whether or not they have a membership, the must be registered. The 1:00-3:00 time is considered "school time" as the Wiscasset School Department has a partnership with the WCC to provide programming during Early Release Days, and that programming is the After School Program, funded by the WSD.
In addition to the Wednesday After School Program at WCC from 1:00-3:00, the After School Program is also providing field trips and other activities for WMHS students to do after school, with transportation home provided.
If you have any questions, please reach out to Elly Thomas, WMHS After School Program Coordinator at ethomas@wiscassetschools.org, or Sarah Hubert, WMHS Interim Principal/Athletic Director at shubert@wiscassetschools.org
Sara's Scholarship - for 9th graders - DUE MARCH 7
Sara's Scholarship is an award enables an immersive outdoor experience for a rising high school sophomore (current freshman) that sparks personal growth and a sense of belonging in the natural world. Winners select an expedition offered by some of Maine’s best trip-leading organizations. These trips can last a week or two, and expose students to beautiful parts of Maine, useful outdoor skills, and even career possibilities.
a note from Mrs. Chelsea Taylor-Smith -
You may have seen the fliers around school for “Sara’s Scholarship”. This is a really great opportunity for freshmen. Scholarship recipients will get the opportunity to have an outdoor experience over the summer, at no cost to you or your family, through a trip-leading organization in Maine, like Chewonki for example. Think of experiences like backpacking, kayaking, sailing. It’s a great opportunity so definitely apply if you are interested! There is a link and a QR code on the fliers, so please check it out!
The reason that I want share information about Sara’s Scholarship is because the inspiration for the scholarship, Sara, was one of my closest friends. I think it’s important that she be remembered, and that you all hear a little bit of history behind this scholarship and the Teens to Trails organization.
I know a lot of you have heard of Teens to Trails before. Alicia, their executive director, was at WMHS earlier in the year for an assembly. To put it simply, Teens to Trails helps connect Maine high schoolers to outdoor experiences and helps support high schools to start and/or maintain their outing clubs. This organization has helped thousands of students and countless schools all over Maine. And the coolest part, to me, is that it started right here in our community.
It sounds like there are some really great trips happening with the outing club this year and I am so excited that it’s making a return here in Wiscasset!
I was on the outing club when I was in school here and had some pretty amazing experiences with friends, like Sara. Sara was a student here who excelled in academics, on the soccer field and loved the outdoors. She was probably one of the only people I have ever met who truly never said anything bad about anyone. She was just kind to her core and had a lot to offer the world. Sadly, Sara was killed in a car accident in the summer of 2005 before her sophomore year. Through their grief Sara’s parents, Bob and Carol created Sara’s Scholarship and Teens to Trails as a way to honor her memory and give back to the community.
In the very beginning Sara’s family, my friends and I used to sell tee shirts at soccer games to fundraise for the scholarship and Teens to Trails. So from pretty humble beginnings this organization has really grown into something incredible that has helped so many of us and it was all because of one really amazing girl. As her friend, I just want to make sure she is remembered. Thank you for letting me talk a little bit about Sara and all the good that continues to be done in her name.
Check out the scholarship opportunity if you are a freshman. Join the outing club, it’s awesome. And even if you do neither of those things.. Get outside!! We live in Maine! It's amazing out there!

Digital senior and baby pictures must be in jpeg format and emailed to: dpooler@wiscassetschools.org (You may take a picture of a picture and send it digitally.)
All pictures and bio forms will need to be received by April 1, 2024 to be included in the High School yearbook. There will be a separate yearbook for the Middle School.
