Dear Families,
Welcome back! We kicked off this week with a new event called "Community Day" where students and staff were shuffled and grouped to engage in activities ranging from sports to making slime. The purpose of Community Day was for students to get to know other students and staff outside of their grade and class. Imagine Field Day mixed with free choice time!
In addition, STEM week started with Museum of Flight hands-on exhibits for grades 3-5 where students built and launched rockets. Next week we will continue with exhibits from Museum of Flight, Burke Museum, and Pacific Science Center with the culminating STEM night on Friday from 5-7pm. Big thanks go to Nethra Krishnamoorthy and Kexin Xu for organizing this week of fun and learning, and to Medina PTA for the generous grant to fund opportunities during the school day for our students.
Lastly, we ended this week with our all-school assembly led by Mr. Saltz and student leaders from the Student Changemakers Committee. They presented information on Sustainable Development Goals and shared the three goals - No Hunger, Climate Action, and Life on Land - that we are focused on as a school.
Wow! As you can tell, we have had a busy week so we hope everyone gets plenty of rest this weekend. Passover also happens during the evening of Monday, April 22nd. For those who celebrate, Happy Pesach to you and yours.
Warmly,
Betty & Brenda

April's Safety Drill
This week, our school will be practicing our earthquake drill. During the drill our students practice the recommended actions of Drop, Cover, and Hold.
While this is just a drill, please keep the following in mind in the event there is a real earthquake:
1. If there is an earthquake while children are on their way to or from school, they should “duck and cover away from power lines, buildings, and trees.” Once the earthquake has stopped, they should follow their family emergency plan. Students on school district buses when the earthquake occurs will be accounted for by the district and will be routed to the safest locations for reunification.
2. Please do not remove a child from the school grounds unless you have first notified school officials. If a parent were to remove a child without checking out, others could be needlessly hurt while searching for a missing child.
3. Please avoid calling the school. The phones, if functioning, may be needed by school staff. Parents of injured children will be notified first. All schools will have trained staff to help injured children until other medical assistance arrives.
Please talk with your student about preparing for emergencies and disasters such as earthquakes. Encourage them to talk about their concerns and express their feelings. Emphasize that even though sometimes things happen that we may not expect, there are lots of things we can do to help us stay safe.
For more information on earthquakes and general preparedness, visit the Washington Emergency Management Division (https://mil.wa.gov/personal) or Great Washington ShakeOut (https://www.shakeout.org/washington/index.html) websites. You may also find the https://www.ready.gov/kids site helpful.
Please let us know if you have any questions.

Who needs to Enroll?
As a reminder, even if you are a returning family, you must enroll any students new to Medina. That includes students with siblings already in Medina or any student entering kindergarten, even if the student is a current Medina preschooler.
New student enrollment (including incoming kindergarteners) for the 2024-2025 school year is now open at https://bsd405.org/schools/enrollment/. While you may enroll your students later, enrolling now helps the district ensure we have the correct staffing to support your students with the smallest classes possible.
If your student is already enrolled in a BSD school, you do not need to submit a new enrollment. They will automatically move up to the next grade.
Pastries with Principals
Please join us for our final Pastries with Principals event for this school year. We welcome Patty Shelton, Amber Anderson, and Eric Nelson, who are curriculum developers in Social Studies, to lead this opportunity for learning. The topic will be on Social Studies and Social Emotional Learning. This event will be in person on Wednesday, May 1st, from 8:15-9:15am. Come enjoy coffee and pastries with us!
